Has anyone used this RAM

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-083-GL&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1387

on a AM3 790FX system.

I'm looking for some RAM which will run at 1600 at CL7, but I understand that most RAM is designed and tested with Intel systems in mind.

I have some Patriot G Series AMD on order but that is out of stock and I'm not sure when it will come in.

So if anyone has used the Geil in an AM3 system I'd be interested in hearing how you got on with it.

Cheers,

Nigel

I wasn't aware that it was tested only on P55 motherboards

I don't know about the Geil, it doesn't say - just commenting that most RAM states that it has been designed or tested with Intel in mind.

so in all fairness it should comply to the DDR3 specification

All the DDR3 RAM sold does.

Unfortunately, the DDR3 specification covers RAM up to 1333MZ at 9-9-9-24

Most of the RAM being sold is overclocked beyond the DDR3 specification.

Many put the configuration parameters in XMP which is an extension to the standard SPD table. Not all, or indeed many, boards can read XMP so they default to whatever is in the SPD which is quite often 9-9-9-24 at 1333.

Some RAM is sold with enhanced configuration in the SPD but not all and unfortunately SPDs aren't usually disclosed by the manufacturer so it's hard to know what you will get until it arrives.

This means to acheive the advertised speed you will have to manually configure your BIOS and voltages.

The problem I had with some different memory that I have since returned was that just setting the main parameters 7-7-7-24-2T @ 1600 @ 1.65V wasn't enough.

It wouldn't run and I was left not knowing whether it was my MoBo, the RAM or the host of other parameters beyond the famous main ones.

That's why I created this thread - to find out whether this RAM runs easily at 1600 CL7 on an AM3 board.

Nigel

Didn't realise that an i7 would run on an AM3 790FX motherboard.

Excellent if it can because that offer me an alternative upgrade route.

Hopefully I'll be able to update you from the new PC itself

Many thanks.

May be too late though as the offer ends tomorrow. I have some Patriot stuff on order but it's out of stock - just wondering whether to wait it out or swap.

Cheers,

Nigel

I'm sure they would be okay - just that I had to send some GSkill back that didn't work as advertised - and when I sort technical help I was just told that it was designed for Intel not AMD.

Cheers,

Nigel
