Hi guys. So I have just ordered a Gelid Icy Vision 2 for my r9 290. I have used this cooler on several cards in the past and its great. I was going to get the accelero extreme iii but decided on icy this time round. Just a quick question.
I have seen people fitting this to the 29 r90 without extra heatsinks that you can buy and I have seen people fit it with the extra kit you can get. Does it really matter? Is there a difference??

Yes adding heatsinks to RAM chips always makes a difference especially with the VRM too.

It can be the difference between a stable/unstable card.

But what im saying is. I have seen some people buy extra kits as well as the cooler, and others just use the coolers and bits that come with it. Just wasn't sure if it mattered. Sorry if I am confusing you lol. It's a fairly quiet cooler anyway I think. The accellero coolers are better and quieter but I don't quite have enough funds for them.

I will take some pictures whilst I do it and see what temps i'm getting. There will be a considerable improvement. The stock cooler on the r9 290's are poor.

I have found the kit some people use, its called the enhancement kit for AMD r9 290 / 290x. So I guess you don't have to use it.

I have the 290x and had the the Gelid Icy Vision 2 cooler. What I can tell you is...the cooler does come with and vrm sink...while the vram sinks are fine for the vram, the stock vrm sink is not directly compatable with the vrm1 (the mount holes don't line up right, but people used means such as securing it via zip-tying the vrm sink down...but that's not ideal), also there's no vrm sink for vrm2, that's why you would want to buy the enhancement kit for AMD r9 290 / 290x.

I have moved on from the Gelid, and now using the Corsair H105 AIO cooler and Corsair HG10 A1 on it :D

I found this video on youtube, he uses a dremmel and makes the holes bigger for the heatsink to line up. He also makes the t shape sinks out of others, It looks simple enough to me. Are those the 2 heatsinks your talking about?

Yes. I myself didn't have the enhancement kit (not yet available at the time), and I used some spare sinks for the Nvidia mounting that came with the cooler plus some creativity for vrm 2 (the T shape one).

On the video at 10.51 he show a sink that doesn't quite fit underneath the card. is that sink really needed? Might be a silly question but I remember on my old 460's I had the same type of thing and I left the sink off completely without issues.

Sorry to bring this thread up again, but was wondering to the guys that have fitted this cooler on r9 290/x. On the larger heatsink that doesn't quite fit without modding, is it possible to use smaller ones in the same place. I have a number of spare smaller ones from previous gelids. My cooler should be coming next week.

Hey guys a little help please. So my gelid came today and there was no silver strip with it. I have used thermal pads instead on the long vrm and have used different vrms as the bigger one was a pain. Anyone know which mounting holes I have to use for the standoffs?

Anyone else got any answers please? Clearly he doesn't know the 290 and 290x ain't mentioned on the instructions. Can't get the corners lined up t all

You should have ordered the v2 that has the long heatsink Just reread title you should have got it i did in my kit but had to extend the holes as it still didnt fit
