Gelid Icy Vision Temp issues

Hi guys,

I've just upgraded the noisy stock fan of the VTX3d Radeon 6850 and I idle temps are between 69c and 73c

I was expecting these to be significantly less. I suspect that either the fans aren't spinning fast enough because the 4 pin connector does not fit on the 3 pin fan port on the GPU. I connected it to an internal 3 pin fan port but how is the fan controlled???

This is a real concern for me as I know I can't play any games whatseover as the system will definitely overheat and crash. Any ideas???

It's either the heatsink not making proper contact with the GPU.
The fan power connector on the Gelid connects should connect to the fan header on the GPU. I assume you're trying to connect it to a motherboard fan header?

Yes but the problem is that the fan header on the GPU is only 3 pin whereas the Gelid cooler is 4 pin. I've a funny feeling that the screws which connect to the bottom of the heatsink may be causing a slight gap between the GPU DIE and the heatsink. They didn't appear to screw in flush. This for me was the most confusing part of the heatsink install. I'll remount the heatsink tomorrow and see what happens. The fan connector definitely still concerns me. There is an adapter with it but it doesn't fir on the board either I don't think?

Ok, great news. I took off the heatsink, thoroughly cleaned the GPU DIE and applied a pea sized blop of thermal paste. I then reinstalled the heatsink. I had indeed install the backplate the wrong way around which left 4 screws slightly protruding from the surface. This caused a very small gap between the GPU and heatsink but it was enough to massively impact temps. It was easy to tell this because when I removed the heatsink the thermal paste was still planted in the middle so the heatsink didn't spread it because it wasn't pushed down enough. Idle temps are now 31c! :D

One other problem I have though. The fan connector. As mentioned previously, the Gelid Icy Vision comes with a 4-pin connector and the one on my GPU is like a mini 3-pin connector. It is even too small for a standard 3-pin fan connector. Is there some kind of converter I can get so that I can fit this to the GPU fan header? Currently I am using the extension cable that comes with the Gelid Icy Vision. This converts the 4-pin connector to a standard 3-pin connector but this still doesn't fit. I connected this to one of the spare fan headers on my motherboard and whilst it does work, only one of the fans spin (quietly). If I also plug in the molex power connector both fans come on but they run at full speed and the noise is unbearable.

Currently I have removed the molex power connector because of the noise I'm currently connected via the extension adapter to one of the spare fan headers on my motherboard. I haven't tried any games as yet but no doubt this will have a significant impact on load temps. Is there a converted available which will enable me to connect the heatsink fans direct to the GPU? Thanks all!

I am absolutely astounded by these temps now. At the moment I have one fan of the two working on a very low setting. I can run Skyrim on ultra high settings and the temps barely reach 50c! This is probably the best upgrade I have made. When I ran Skyrim before installing the Icy Vision the noise from the stock cooler on the VTX3D Radeon 6850 became unbearable after a few minutes. Now I can barely hear my PC (also thanks to the Gelid Tranquillo CPU cooler). Well please with the results :-)
