Had a new Consumer unit fitted. due to New shower unit blowing fuses. Turns out wiring not 'beefy' enough
Chap that did it worked to Part P
When checking wiring found out the following
Feed to garage and shed was wired off a 13A socket off the ring ( Horrors) This was disconnected at once
The wiring was as follows
single non SWA cable running from said socket to garage where there were three twin socket outlets
From this it ran to garage where my workshop is. Six twin outlets running a Metal lathe and an Warco miller/drill ( although not a same time!)
Now i am more mechanical than electrical so was blissfully unaware of this set up by the previous owner, but savvy enough to realise that for the last 20 years i had rode my luck!

As this was a guy doing 'beer money' or whatever you call it, he didnt want to run all the new cable and wiring. He suggested separate feeds off the new unit to serve garage and shed, with a garage consumer unit on each. So I have run two new cables ( 6mm) NOT wired up to Main CU. to garage and shed. The new feeds are now run up to loft and then out in pvc piping from house to garage/shed. The pipe is attached to side of house and fencing at a height of 5ft above ground so no wiring is now exposed to elements
I have been given two garage CU which are plastic ( which i think are now outlawed?) and renewed all the internal wiring in the garage and shed..( 4mm for sockets and 2.5 for lighting ,all Twin and earth) again not connected. The six workshop sockets are to be ring main from the Garage unit rather than 6 on a single spur . The garage will have three twins on a spur

Now questions are

do i need to get the new metal garage units and bin the old plastic ones?

Do i need to have the units anyway? ( would rather have a bit more protection, and keep the 'power' and lighting ccts apart)
As nothing is yet connected to the main no problem with me blowing myself up, plus i do know enough to get the sockets wired correctly!

However the guy has now moved out of the district and no contact number!
SO
Would a chap come and do the following
Connect the two new 6mm cable to the main CU
Connect the ends of said cables to the outbuildings CU and complete the intl connections
Check out the additions to the system and do a cert
Also any idea of time it would take as getting time off work during the week is a bit of a bugger ( i am guessing less that a morning 6 connections at 15 min plus a check of 60 mins?)
Or would he get all sniffy and insist on doing the redoing the new wiring himself or just quote telephone number not to do it? As one chap already has.

Whilst i could!!!! complete it (wikipedia is a wonderful thing), i want it 100% legit

TIA for any advice on if i am ok so far

I'm a sparks and tbh you'll need to post some photos. Nothing wrong with a spur off a ring providing it's fused to the cable rating.

Edit: strong first post...

Was about to say the same thing, there is nothing actually wrong with the initial setup provided that it was via a fused spur which would be extremely simple to retrofit.

Did he replace the wiring for the shower? I wouldn't trust a thing hes done by the sounds of it. If you want it done 100% get a firm in to do it and get the certificates from them. If he's replaced the Consumer Unit you should have a new test sheet for your house?

Yes new wiring for the shower. He came round, check what needed doing and told me to run all the cable. So I ran all the wiring10mm for showerand 6mmm for the extl two, he changed the unit and connected the shower . The extl power wiring was just placed in the loft waiting further work by me

i DO have a cert.. by 'beer money' .he was the next door neighbour of a friend and had had done some work for him ....all legal and certificated and off the book
Same as i would do a wedding hire for a mate for the running costs

Because i wanted to run the new outside cabling in a pipe rather than just having some 4mm nailed to a rickety fence, it has taken me a while to get it ready to be finished Now i have two 6mm T+E safely run from the loft via PVC drain pipe firmly fixed to wall of house, concrete fence posts and rear of garage. disappearing through a 50mm hole into garage.through which the pipe has been put.
The feed to shed runs inside the garage and then comes out and into shed via another piece of 50mm pipe
The 'A' ends are waiting to be connected to inside Unit, both 'B' ends dangle above the two ( CED) garage consumer units in shed and garage waiting connection The shed sockets have been rewired with 2.5mm T+E and 'converted ' to ring main by running a cable from last socket back to unit. Plus wiring in the renewed lighting cct cabling

Garage sockets have been tidied up ( reduced from

(cont)
reduced from 4 to 3 and a spur from one removed. All wiring renewed

Last question is concerning the garage units. They are CED plastic ones

looking at the latest regs. it look like these are now verboten and Metal ones must be fitted

Is this correct?

( seems a bit weird if the regs were changed because of fire risk YET, as far as i can tell. it does not specify that all existing plastic units must be upgraded to the metal ones surely if they were dodgy then they still are))

it would be nice if the CED ones could be used as it would save me a lot of cash if i dont have to buy the metal ones

Thanks

I'd just use the plastic CU's the catching fire stuff is a load of nonsense! The wiringbregs are never retrospectively enforced so existing plastic boxes are fine. Basically the regs have to change every year to keep a few big wigs in beer money 99% of changes are change foot changes sake!

If you are really that worries about using the plastic ones you can put them in a fireproof box and comply with the regs that way!

Back on topic I'd just hook the lot up yourself it is as easy as wiring a plug!

Alex

just to be 100%
If the regs for metal units were dated say Jan 1 2016 and he signed it off on mar 3 this year
The plastic unit would still be 'legal' even though coming into use for first time on that date

sorry to appear dense but i dont want to get anybody in 'official ****
