General Filament Chat

anyone used ELEGOO Rapid PLA Plus? it's being _terrible_.
like, the most melty crud ever. even at 190c. going lower doesn't help either.

I got a load of Bambu filament in the sale splitting between me and my sister so it was £9 each for the refill. I really like the matte colours they have

I ordered some Sunlu PLA+ filament on Tuesday (not realising it would discounted even more from today!). Are the spools reusable? If I order more today, can I just order refills?

What printer are you using?

I've used it a couple of times and it printed fine on the P1S using just the Bambu PLA Basic profile and I've also ran it fine on the Prusa Core One with their proper "Elegoo Rapid PLA+" profile. I imagine if you've got it extruding slowly you might have issues.

It looks like it on their website but its not arrived yet so not sure what will turn up as they mention on their site that they are transitioning to a newer spool.
Yeah it would be risky to order refills without seeing them. I’ve had both the new and old types recently

Just cracked open a Sunlu black PLA filament refill and it fits on a Bambu spool just fine. Today I'll have a look at the Sunlu sales because I think I received an email a day or two ago about something big.

I was given an Ender Pro 2 and am just getting into 3D printing. It came with 2 spools of PLA filament but I'd like some more colours. What are the best places to buy from and is PLA+ worth considering at this stage. Upcoming prints I have are a Pi 5 case with cooling and some food storage boxes.

Not sure PLA+ is going to make much of a noticeable difference - but please correct me if I'm wrong as I don't use PLA very much. PETG is worth trying too. It lets you do stuff with a little flex like catches on boxes and even some flex hinges if designed well. PLA is more brittle and would have a tendency to snap/shatter.
I believe that PLA may handle overhangs better but that could just be that my layer fan is known to be underpowered.
My Pi5 (with PoE HAT and underslung M.2 carrier spaced further than normal to accommodate a heatsink) is in a printed case (perched on top of server) made from PETG with hex holes for airflow.
I'm not going to tell you what to do with your 3D printed stuff in your own home but I do want to make sure that you're aware that 3D printed items are difficult to make technically food-safe and even harder to keep them that way. Some filaments may be food-safe but the dyes/additives may not be or you get cross contamination from other filaments that have been throthe same extruder and hotend. Bacteria can breed in the layer line gaps where you can't easily clean it. ABS is considered toxic. Just make sure you do your research and make sure you're happy before you do anything with direct food contact.
I've got kitchen roll holders 3D printed and sort of holsters for foil and cling film boxes and I've got a 3D printed coffee grind WDT tool (Umikot) so where you draw the line is up to you.

That's interesting about the food containers, thanks. Actually is was specifically for pistachio nuts as I've seen a container that holds the nuts in a top layer, with a hole through to the bottom layer so you have somewhere to put the shells. I thought it was quite cool!

Just purchased 3x PLA+ refill filaments from the Sunlu webby for £24.50. Black, Grey and Red. Still need to get a metallic and wood filament from Bambu so I'll wait for that.

Right now I am printing out a small shoe rack for my hallway using this design and tweaking it for height.

I haven't used wood filament for ages as I had a few clogs from it. I think the wood particles in it can make it more prone to clogging

I purchased the Sunlu Filadryer S1 plus to help dry out my filament during the winter and it appears to be doing the job quite well.
Some of the cheaper filaments off Amazon don't appear to hold up as well as the better brands.
