General maintainence of computer...advice

Run as few so-called security programs as possible. I've read of people using multiple anti-spyware and anti-viral apps, many of which are memory resident and consume memory and CPU power galore. Some morons apparently run two (2!) firewalls simultaneously. Don't be one of them.

Use Winpatrol (or something like it) to alert you when a program tries to set itself to launch on startup. Have as few items in your system tray as possible.

Uninstall programs you don’t use, see what you have in the startup folder and get rid of it and do you really need to have lots of shortcut icons on your desktop.

Use the startup option in Ccleaner which is an easy way to delete startup registry entires.
