General OS issues (possibly)

My friend has recently been having issues with his computer.
It first started when he booted up his PC and startup programs wouldn't start up except for a few. He couldn't open any programs or right click until all his background programs were closed. Even when all programs were closed he could only launch one.
Windows update may have caused it and it still happens now but not very often.
Usually solved with a shutdown, restarts cause the error.

Sometimes when he boots up his PC it BSODs.

Guild Wars 2 after the update yesterday will not launch now. Affinity mode does not solve this.

EDIT: GW2 doesn't load off the disk either. Same error.

Driver updates have not helped, even with beta.

Skype process starts then quits but after the 5th attempt it will.

His OS is on C drive which is an SSD. Programs and user are on D drive HDD via sym links

That's what I said but he doesn't really want to do that unless its a last resort.

for me, most of the time it's the first resort, you can spend hours trying to sort something out that can't be repaired anyway, if it's older than 6 months, format it, get rid of so much junk, the pc will fly, no other way cleans out as much, and sorts out so many problems, in the short and long run it's quicker, been repairing pc's for more than 20 years, reinstalling o/s over the top, running repair programs, system file checker etc, no matter what scanner you use, the more rubbish it will find, the more errors to repair, better to just back up, format, reinstall and put on every up date there is and sort drivers out, put on anti virus and spyware tools etc, then put back on back, after you have first install and updated all the programs used, or needed, as most won't be or never been used etc.

Edit. If all his files are on the HDD and only the OS is on the SSD then surely a reformat of the SSD will be the easiest solution.

He has only recently reinstalled (2 months ago) and doesn't have the hard drive space to backup some let alone everything.
He has a feeling that it could be hardware related too.

That is an option but would the symlinks stay intact?

It seems that it was some registry errors that have been fixed by CCleaner

From personal experience random crashes and general things not working as expected all of the time can also be symptomatic of a faulty hdd. Had the same issue with a mechanical drive which had physically damaged bad sectors.

With an SSD it should sort itself out. And besides, I think it will reappear. I don't like the symlinks and the way he has installed his OS
