Hey. I have:

GA-G33M-DS2R MATX MOBO
[email protected] 1.25v
512mb 8800GTS @ Stock
2gb Corsair 6400 Ram

I was wondering if upgrading my cpu to an E8200 would help in gaming. I run at 1920x1200 and pretty much every game i play i have some form of problem - mainly stuttering and low fps sometimes. It stuttered a lot before i clocked the cpu up to its current 2.8ghz (a +1ghz clock) and I thought maybe the E8200 would help even more because of the increased cache size etc ?

My main concern is that I play TF2 and on 24 man servers at 1920x1200 the fps will drop to 25 on goldrush in very intense battles looking over an expanse of landscape.

Yeah so basically e8200 vs [email protected].
Regards.

Have you tried clocking the 8800GTS?

But yeah it might be time for a CPU upgrade. It would be worth considering the E8400 as it can be picked up for around £120 these days.

Would overclocking the GPU make a big difference? Its in an MATX case so the extra heat could be bad :P
I might wait until the price of the 8400 drops on ocuk cos 160 is quite bad :P

Give it a go.

Tho if the CPU is holding you back then it might not make much difference.

Might be worth investing in another 2gb of memory too.

Dont really know how memory works but i never use more than 1gb of it in the games i play . hmm.

plus i use xp

Not really.

And stuttering has pretty much gone since clocking the cpu, and the fps increased a lot too; but I was wondering if an 8200 would show even better fps gains if I upgraded.

Might be better asking in the graphics card forum.

They'll know which CPU's bottleneck which cards.

TF2 is largely CPU limited and the fps drops could be attributed to lower clocks and cache size.

Your GPU is hardly the problem as it's one of the fastest currently out....I would sell of the E2160 and browse the members market for a cheaper and newer CPU with 4mb cache that overclocks past 3ghz easily. Something like a E6550, E6600, E6750...

Or you could pick up the E7200, that will do well over 3ghz and perform very well for the money.

hl2 engine uses cpu biased coding :)

you could have a 8800gtx and a e2 and still get same fps

with hl2 it works like this

everything is done on the cpu (including some physics)

gpu is used for just the extras 16aa high models etc.

when jumping from AMD 3800 x2 (2.0) to a Q6600 (2.4) i noticed (same gpu) i noticed a 80fps boost! thats running 1650x1050 ( used to get 60-100fps max) but now i can play at 1920x1080 and run (60-100fps)

hope it helps

I might go grab a q6600 then cos they have a 9x multiplier. I could run it at 3ghz then hopefully.

A quad would be good for future games, but for TF2 the E7200 is a much better bet, and you can probably do 3.6-3.8ghz with it. (45nm and 9.5 multi)
