I have a setup of 3 x 1GB RAM sticks in my i7 system, it is a tri channel setup. I have 2 more slots left, I am wondering if I can insert a different quantity into these slots. So another 3 x 2GB, will this work?

Thanks

It should work.

You'll need to match the RAM speed, timings and voltage.

If you have an overclock on the processor then filling all the RAM slots can affect this.

Mixing capacity is not a problem - as Surveyor says, make sure you find sticks with comparable voltage and timings.

You'll need a 64 bit operating system to use ram > 3gb, so if you have 32bit windows you'll need to upgrade that also.

Nope, it's purpose is for thin clients. Tbh these days more ram is being used, some x58 boards support up to 48GB of RAM. At my work they have roughly 32GB of ram, and we still run out when processing lol.

86GB just doesn't seem to divide correctly between numbers of memory slots and DIMM sizes.
