Just put down a deposit on a 3 door Black 2.0 petrol Focus Titanium 55 plate with a pretty stunning 26k mileage.

Its a fair distance away (200 miles) but should be worth the trip, or so I hope.

I know its not going to set the world on fire, but after owning 2 admittedly very reliable 306's it should be a nice change.

*Be kind Fox*

Well for £5,200 I thought that was a pretty good deal? Ok maybe the mileage is just less than average rather than stunning..

Not sure if I would want to travel that far for a car that doesn't sound great - entirely depends on condition but I would be wary of being a car with that mileage at that age - that's an awful lot of short journeys (assuming that's what it's been used for).

Or very few long journeys :P

What would you look out for on a car thats had lots of short journeys? The usual oil cap gunk?

Its from Evans Halshaw/Stratstone/Peugeot in Wakefield, with 90 days warranty etc which is valid to the local Evans down in Chesham (a lot nearer than 200 miles..) which I might look to get extended, but I thought these cars are pretty reliable, build quality might be a little low, but then I'm used to french, so can't be that bad ;)

There should be a ban for everyone who says 200 miles to buy a good car is a "fair distance away". It's not like you're going to Japan to buy a prime example now is it? :p

Doesn't sound too bad tbh, a good check over it and you could have yourself a nice car :)

I thought 3 months was about average? I went to a local dealer, same price but 54k miles and they offered 6 months tax and warranty which I thought was unusual..

Any idea how much it would be to extend?

Will probably get the train up for £30, if its a lemon I get my deposit back and go home. Nearly 5 hours on the train each way though :s

Unrelated, anyone in Wakefield want to look over a car?

Its further than I've been for a car before, but to add that many miles to a car is not a problem if it all works out and is a genuine deal, the time wasted is worth more than the distance/cost involved imho.

Wait are you telling us you put down a deposit on a 5.5 year old Focus without even looking at it?!

Why did you do that  Surely you've compromised your negotiating position as well, how are you meant to haggle now?

You put a deposit on it? I doubt it would have sold in the period before you get to see it. As fox said, now you have less/no ground to hassle?

I don't think there is much haggle room to be honest, the car is fairly priced and was advertised at £5,744, but when I clicked through the price was £5,244 so I gave them a ring. The price has now gone back up on all the sites to £5,744.

I've put down £100 to secure it, the guy said if I didn't like it he would refund the deposit.

Not a huge amount to lose, just the travel each way. Why what do you think I could get it for? I doubt the margin is that large as the cars are priced the same privately.

You wont get it for a penny under £5200 as you've put a deposit down. I'm not even sure why you've done this, it's miles away and it's hardly deal of the decade

Travelling 200 miles away to look at what was one of the best selling cars of the time? I don't mind driving around for a car but something as common as a Focus, come on. The bloke probably knows you are coming all that way and you've put a deposit down. Bargaining power = gone.
