Well, just dug my generic Playstation<>USB adapter and PS2 pad out the loft and to my surprise, Windows recognised it and installed drivers and the pad just works.

Im sure in XP and Vista I needed drivers which in X64 on Vista I was unable to get as the adapter was old and cheap.

Yeah usually these PS2-to-USB adaptors (OR any others!) should work off the bat as it uses standard generic drivers. Unless the official drivers has more elaborate and specific software in them, then you can use those if you wish as long as they are fully supported in the O/S you want to use it on.

My MayFlash Super Joy Box Pro 5 works without drivers in Windows XP x64 Edition, but doesn't have as detailed configuration options as if I was to use it on the 32-bit XP or Vista.
