I hope Sony lose. I have the opinion of when you buy something, you are can mess with it in any way you want.

Sony will never stop this now, the next time someone breaks their system, just stay anonymous. Upload files from public locations etc. It's all about the fame game now though, can't blame them.

EDIT: Just a restraining order for now.

Sony are just flexing the guns, why bother it will do nothing to stop it now. They would have been better off offering the guy a job tbh.

I haven't read the whole link yet but I don't agree with what you've said in the first few sentences. If you buy something like a PS3 for example and you agree to the terms Sony set then that should be it and you use it only in the way in which they mean for it to be used.

Yay for hackers and pirates:rolleyes:
You only own the hardware, the software is property of Sony so you can do what you want to the hardware but software is copyrighted and belongs to them. Thing is it will be stopped next FW when usb updates are removed and you have to do either on PSN or via a disk.

What are you on about. They could just put their own custom firmware on a disc.

At the end of the day, Sony messed up, they had a good 5 years and built a solid user base. Not everyones a pirate and will still buy games regardless. It's their own fault.

This was bound to happen. Bascially, you buy a games console and you should expect to buy software for it and use it as supplied...

Can't help feel like wishing the best for Sony and hope they win, but guess they'll always be fighting this.. Someone will always say 'i can do whatever I damn well please' and mostly do...!! Fact of life sadly.

Geohot is a gimp, he's chasing fame and fortune and doesn't care who's toes he steps on. He's constantly winding the community up, wasting exploits and generally being a pain. Would love to see him taken down a peg or 6.

To be honest, I don’t appreciate the work of these hacking crews as all these forced firmware updates run the risk of bricking my console. Wish they’d just leave well alone, as has been mentioned. Forced firmware to play newer games will come into force. Great. I get anxiety attacks each time my PS3 firmware updates after having a perfectly working PS3 bricked via a firmware update once before.

I am not all that thankful for the work of these hackers. Still, what you going to do? They’ll always be those that feel they can ‘beat’ the system and these hacking crews do seem to like seeking fame and glory. Grrr..!!

That’s fine, as long as it doesn’t affect me, but it will if a firmware update due to these hackers bricks my PS3.

Sure many won't agree with me.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but the PS3 has many redundancy procedures when doing a firmware update. I think it stores the old firmware and if theres any issues updating, reverts back to it.

Yeah they could but it wont work lol, a BD player checks certain areas of a pressed disk to see if its a BDR or pressed, a BDR has no access to these parts so a BD player knows what is or isnt a "proper" disk. This is in the hardware of the drive and hasnt been compromised and as far as i know is secure. Could easily be put on game disks or even requested from Sony so shouldnt casue an to those not connected online, games could require this to be installed before running.

To be fair, Sony were bound to respond, but their rhetoric is fairly pathetic. Banging on about video game piracy. We all know this had nothing whatsoever to do with running pirated games, and everything to do with gaining access to some fairly awesome hardware. Sony's current stance makes it look like a pathetic RIAA school child.

Ahh, its early lol.

I like how you blame the hackers for Sony's incompetence, the issue is with them if official Sony firmware is bricking their own consoles.

This was bound to happen. Bascially, you buy a games console and you should expect to buy software for it and use it as supplied...

Who cares? You can't buy FTP/Emulator/Media Centre...etc software for PS3

That'll soon get compromised.

Anyway I've come to the conclusion that if I do go the CFW route on my PS3 I just won't update it, PSN is pants compared to Live and there's no exclusives I have any interest in playing online on the PS3. I am however very interested in proper MKV playback, worth the trade off for me. There's already a NES emulator too! Brilliant.

Well technically I’m not trying to apportion blame on Sony or hackers or anyone, I’m just merely stating that all of this hacking, CFW etc means those who aren’t interested in running CFW or feel things shouldn’t be messed around with will or could suffer in the long run.

I do however feel a games console is just that, a games console regardless of if anyone feels the hardware should be able to do more. If you want to play MKV files and Sony haven’t implemented the feature there are ways around this – such as using a conversion app to covert to a format the PS3 can playback. Or us PS3 MediaServer as I do…

I can see the many for and against arguments for CFW on a piece of hardware that could do a lot more then what is currently allowed. However it’s the countermeasures by the supplier of the hardware to try and prevent these CFW updates being run that affect those who hold no interest in this, and how is that fair if an update bricks or does something to their console?

Incompetence of Sony or not, firmware updates to any electrical item can run the risk of corruption or something happening that wouldn’t have happened if the firmware update hadn’t been required.

Look, I really do not know enough to compile a really solid argument against all of this, therefore I tip my hat and bow out wish those who do not want to run CFW trouble free console ownership and those who want CFW and the features it can bring the best of luck and hope it works out – as long as games continued to be released for the PS3 then I’m happy enough to buy them and run my console plain vanilla.
