Incredible but true: The German interiour ministers have just finalised a law fobidding shooters to be produced and/or distributed in Germany.

Apparently there were school shootings along the lines of Columbine, and shooter games have been named as sole cause.

A bit drastic and slightly questionable, isn't it?

Darn fools. Next they'll be trying to sue Valve with inciting violence via Counter Strike!

Interesting article, seems like a knee-jerk reaction to the spate of shootings. Why, then, have other countries not experienced this where shooting games are allowed? kind of reminds me of that crazy kid shouting at unreal tournament and throwing his keyboard around.

Well, that's one country I'll never move to.... blimmin heck, whatever happened to people being held responsible for their own actions? It's been said many a time before, it should be the adults who should have been minding what these killers were consuming. Also, a psycho is a psycho, and I am sure that these games not being available won't stop them doing what comes naturally.

Scapegoating, blaming other things for their own problems. It's a classic case of stout German denial that they're doing anything wrong.

Where does this leave Crytek if there's a ban on developing? They're based in Deutschland aren't they?

The Americans did the same with alcohol during prohibiton and that worked didn't it.

Any body in Germany that wants to play games that are banned will just buy them off Ebay from other EU countries or use a proxy server to buy them from Steam or other digital distributers.

Well i live in germany but i buy pc games from england if i cant get them over here, they should make another law, NO FAT POLITICIANS !!!
Theyd soon lift the shooters law :D

It'd also be equally stupid and unpopular, though I feel you were probably joking!

Living in Germany, do you find that kids and young adults are particularly susceptible to the influences of violent games there, or is this just purely something to blame violence on?

Just something to blame the violence on, i play a lot of video games and i would never think about taking a gun to a school full of kids etc.. the person who does this has to be slightly demented to start with, politicians always want to blame the video game industry for all the troubles of the world.

So in your opinion it's unjustified, and i'm sure an unpopular policy with kids, but do you think the general (of voting age) public is behind it, like the mums of these kids, or is this going to be broadly unpopular? I guess it could be anywhere inbetween too.

It's to do with conditioning; with some people the line between the latest shooter and reality gets a little blurred.

Speaking from experience shoot1st? :p

Surely these people are the ones with issues already, not a section of the population that's going to just disappear when you ban shooting games.

Its just the politicians picking the easy target and yes its very unpopular with a lot of age groups over here as games over here are a big part of the culture.
