I currently have a half-decent system already, but it's not quite there yet for some of my games.

E6300 @ 2.51ghz
4x1024 PC6400C GEiL
8800GTS 320mb
MSI 975x Platinum
Vista X64

Several things to note: my monitor's resolution is 1680x1050, my motherboard is so poor it won't overclock beyond 2.51ghz and getting another one is out of the question since I would have to buy Vista again (it's OEM) and the graphic card's relatively low memory means I see some slowdown at times.

Oblivion runs at 15-20fps with slowdown and mouselag in forest areas. Farcry runs with slowdown with AA. Stalker is 10-15fps with no AA and full settings. Would a 8800GTX 768mb see off those slowdowns or am I doomed to stay with them because of my crap motherboard?

3d mark is pretty high so it's not a hardware issue.

Or you could just get a GTS 640?, I had exactly the same problems as you with my 320 I made a thread about it saying that the 320 wasn't ennough for 1680x1050 with the low memory and everyone argued and shot me down saying it was more than capable. But as you have now proved it just isn't.

I definately don't think that 320mb on a video card nowadays is a very sensible investment. many games allready have shown they need over 256mb for high res textures, and when you push resolutions up, games really do need 512mb or beyond, and this is know. With the advent of crysis, we are all only going to need more and more vram.

I will see it how goes when Crysis comes out or has shown genuine benchmarks before release. I am looking at the OCuK 8800GTX right now though. Not too shabby.

Ouch, taking a serious performance hit there, ive got the same setup as yourself but running a Leadtek 8800GTS with 640mb and stalker plays fine at max details with fps of 40 upwards.
Theres something seriously wrong somewhere, at 10-15fps thats a joke!. The 8800gts should eat it, and your processor overclocked to 2.5ghz is more than enough, I cant see it all being down to the extra memory on the graphics card.
Im also running on a 22inch widescreen at 1680x1050

or you could have this problem http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17755357 , id agree with the above, there is definately something wrong there, Stalker shouldn't be running that bad, nor shoud Oblivion, i have Stalker maxed out 1280x1024 and i get about 50-60 (v-sync on), plus Stalker can't even do AA, so that wont have an affect at all wether its on or off, even Oblivion for me is about 44fps+ outdoors maxed out, HDR the lot, and thats with that texture pack that gets rid of the blury distance to, i can't see how by just increasing the res to 1680x1050 brings it's down to its kness to below 20fps in games, my rigs all stock still to.

Its what loadsa is suggesting, there is a memory flush problem by the looks of things and I experienced it recently in oblivion where from starting outdoors everything is runnin happily and smoothly, then indoors, again the same, then back outdoors and lots of grass later the system gets crippled.

This is of course not due to the cards "lack of memory" as the same scene was rendered previously running fine and I do believe it is a memory flushing issue in certain games. You load up your save again at the crippled performance and its fine again.

I don't get it in Oblivion, i do get it in Stalker, but only when i start a new zone, as for some reason it does not clear the memory from the previous one so its really laggy when i start it, so now when i start a new zone i just do a vid_restart, or what i used to do, save quit and a reload as that fixes it, but once ive done that i can go through the whole of the zone perfectly fine so its not really a bother to me in that, and i dont get the prob much at all, only had it in Tomb Raider Legend as well, but i know for some ppl its really bad.

Happens in Oblivion playing it @ 8xAA ;) anything lower and its fine all the time

World of Warcraft and 3dmark 06 runs just fine, but I really am starting to think the 8800GTS 320mb just isn't gonna cut it at 1680x1050. You sure it's just not my relatively lower clocked E6300?

Definately not mate, my e6300 only runs at 2.45 due to my terrible 945 chipset and its limitations. iv only noticed this in games like oblivion when I put the AA up admitadly too high. No harm in waiting for Bioshock etc to come out before making a decision. Bisoshock is out August 24th I believe and that SHOULD be coded pretty well

I got the same with my 320, but I do not get it with my 2900 which has 512MB also nor do i get "memory flushing in oblivion" Just consistant frames the whole time.
