Get a Q9550 now or wait and get the E0 Q9550

I’m in the middle of upgrading and not sure what to do?

I have already bought a new mobo and some ram and not sure what to do, get a Q9550 now or wait and get the E0 version. I was thinking of doing a small OC to 3GHz so it is running the same as a Q9650, later I may try to OC it higher but would be happy with about 3.2GHz. I’m not bothered about trying to max out the CPU.

The thing is I have had my new mobo and ram for about 3 weeks now and I just want to buy the Q9550 so I can finish my upgrade.

Do you think I will notice much of a difference between the two versions, if I do decide to OC especially as I do not want to max out the CPU?

its a tough one. I'd recommend that you wait, you'll get better temps, and more o/c manoeuvrability should you decide to extend your o/c in the future.

easier said than done though ;)

Really need someone to buy one of the ones that came into stock today to see which stepping they are.

Its the same story as the E8600.

Only the E8600 and Q9650 are E0 today, the other models with E0 are later week(s), infact the Quad did not make it today if you look at store, the E8600 did get in later though.

I have been waiting since the 20th of July as I had heard the prices drops were coming and thought I would wait for the price cuts. Now theirs a new stepping coming out and its ether get the current Q9550 or play the waiting game again for a few more weeks :(

I find nothing worse than having a nice new Gigabyte GA-EP35C-DS3R Intel P35 motherboard and 4GB of Corsair DDR2 XMS2 DHX PC2-6400C4DHX sitting in their packaging. Next to my PC with a x2 4800+, 2GB of ram and a NF4 mobo, which is all bottle necking my 3870 x2.

helmutcheese I noticed you have some Corsair DDR2 XMS2 DHX PC2-6400C4DHX, what do you think of it?

No WAY would I buy a chip knowing that in a few weeks a better revision would be coming out!

No waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!

You'd have "Buyer's Regret" for the life of ownership!

Plus your chip will always be worth less 2nd hand since it will be the old stepping.

The new stepping might give you and extra 200Mhz for free.

Of course, if you don't overclock you may as well buy one today rather than wait.

I'm in the same boat OP. After all the bad reports on here about how the Q6600 has gone to ****, I'm left with the Q9500. But then we hear if we wait til 21st August for E0s release (then how many weeks for it to filter through to retailers?) it'd be better yet.

The thing is though, I've been waiting to upgrade for about three months!! There's always something cheaper/cooler/faster/better a month away, if you just wait... But once that month arrives, there's yet more to be had if you wait just another month... You'd end up never upgrading lol

I'm sat here with £450 to spend on a mobo/CPU/RAM and have had it for so long now I've already missed the boat on the Q6600. How long to wait? After all i7/Nehalem isn't far off... hehe It's getting ridiculous now!

Always the same. I've done it in the past. Wait another 3 weeks, then another, and another and before you know it, you haven't upgraded for 6 months.

An i7/Nehalem rig of cpu/mobo/ram will set you back £700-£900 though so no point waiting for that at least until another year for prices to fall.

I feel for you but if it was me I would another few weeks. At least ram and mobos get cheaper every week to boot as well.

sure the new 9550s are not using the new stepping and how can u tell otherwise?

The Q9650 is the first to use the new stepping with the others to follow shortly.

If somebody had stock of cpus on e8600 launch then they are 100% certain to be the old stepping.

The only way for sure is to buy one but what happens if it is the old stepping?

I would at least wait for somebody to buy one and report they have the new stepping before ordering one.

Even then I can remember when g0 q6600 came out some etailers had stock of both and it was a 50/50 chance as to which you got.

Yeah I think I'll stick to my guns and hold back for the Q9550 E0, and then just buy it. I'm sick of waiting lol I was so close to just ordering an E8500 or Q6700 today to have done with it. Going from a socket 939 Athlon 64 X2 4200 and 3GB of 200Mhz RAM I doubt I'd have been disappointed either way LOL

You won't be. I was blown away going from my 3Ghz 4200+ x2 and 2gb of ram to my q6600 with 4gb of ram. :D And that was with the q6600 at stock. Once I got her up to 3.8Ghz.......

Same boat here. Recently bought an e8500, but I just want a quad. I miss my q6600.

And my e4300 is no longer stable with even a mild OC, and is too slow at stock, so won't be able to wait too long.

Would buy a q9450 now if they could be had for around £150. Don't want another 65nm cause they require the larger heatsinks when going over 3GHz and I hate the bulky coolers.

Only want around 3.6 from a quad, so not sure if I really need to wait for a E0 stepping. Just don't like the current prices. Wish they would jsut drop already (though the 9550 has dropped)
