Get new card or wait for Maxwell?

Been needing to get a new card for sometime now. I saw the R9 290 offer, but I live no where near there so I couldn't get one. But that aside, is it worth getting something like the R9 290 now, or should I wait for the GTX 870\880?

I currently have a HD 4870 1GB, it's getting really old, and I only have the summer to really play games. Not really sure if it is worth getting something now or whether I should wait, also is there any chance of getting a R9 290 at £199 on another deal?

In your situation, it's time to buy a new card. If you had something decent (7970 - 670) then maybe you could hold off, but as you are running something REALLY REALLY old and slow, I don’t think it's wrong to upgrade.

When is Maxell due? I’m not the one to say as I don’t know, but I think the rumour is late this year....

How much do you game, what resolution and what are you playing?

If your playing the latest AAA titles now, then time to get a 290/780.

But what is the rest of the system, becuase no point getting a decent card if the rest of the system isnt balanced.

Run at 2560 x 1440, don't play that many games, but do want to play some latest games. I have so many games that I can't run currently, like Crysis 2, Rage, Saints Row 3 and IV on max. I can hold off playing things like Watch Dogs though. For the rest of my system, I have a 3930k, and 16GB of memory. Have a really old HDD, so that's another thing that I need to get.

Crysis 2 & 3, Metro Last Light, Far Cry 3, Rage, Wolfenstein are the games that I would like to play. But if I can't, it doesn't really matter, I have loads of games that I can run that I still want to play like F.E.A.R 2 and 3, Dead Space games and for things like Tomb Raider I don't really mind turn the graphics (and res) down a bit. But it was at the point where I was getting 30 FPS (at 1080p) on Payday 2, and having terrible input lag, that I realised that my card is getting really old.

Honestly if it were me and I already have that 3930k and plenty of ram like yourself and played at that res I would pick up a 290 or at a minimum 280x and a 120ish gig SSD for windows.. Use your old HDD as a game drive and you would be set for quite a long time.

I am assuming you do not have a SSD so the SSD alone will make it feel like a new computer as everything from boot up to general windows tasks will seem instant from what your used to. SSD might be the best investment I ever made. Between that and the new vid card I see no reason why you wouldnt be set for a couple years.

Have a Vetex 2 60GB, but the SSD is for another tread, although the MX100 256GB looks really good if it hits £70.

I think maybe the best thing to do is wait and see what Tonga does and play games like Dead Space or something. From what I understand it will be the same as the 280 and 280x, only a lot more efficient and most likely higher clock speeds and a bit cheaper.
