so ive got some friends and family who are interested in me building them their first desktops for home use.

They dont have to be power houses (obv wont be for £300) but would look for something to play most games at at least half decent settings.

Ive so far managed to just about squeeze in this build

Case - £25
Probably something in the region of a 7770 - roughly £90
PSU 500w (?) - £30
DVD R/w - £10
HDD 500gb 7.2k - £40
MEM - 4gb - £35

Leaves me roughly £70 to get a mobo/cpu?? Maybe pick up a mobo for £35 but cant see myself getting a half decent cpu for £35?? lol

Any suggestions on a build would be greatly appreciated.

ah man lol, how did i forget os !

Yes, 2nd hand would be fine as well. I can do the builds but just trying to get an expectation of budgets. Its 5 family members so far and they each said willing to pay £300.

They all coming from beat up old windows 95/vista boxes so they are looking for upgrades. They have kids around 10-13 so will be looking for some gaming capacity. Granted they wont be running Bf4 in ultra but want to give them some room for use.

I guess i want a good family generic build but with that added bit of kick for gaming...if that makes sense

Second hard maybe something like my old build:

Phenom 965 build may be worth it, they can be picked up around £30-40.
Look at a 6950/6970 second hand, or 7850 region... £80?
Simple motherboard, I have an Asrock Extreme3 with my Phenom. £40?
450W or 550W PSU.

Will worry about screens a bit later, i think most already have something in place that will suffice.

Snips / Reaper, just going to go through your specs but so far they look very good mate! Cheers

Also, how is the APU tech working out? Would these builds be able to run games like Thief, BF4 in some kind of capacity? Thanks again guys
