As title really peeps.

Got payed yesterday and was gonna get a Sapphire R9 280X Vapor X however i see the Toxics are due in and the reviews i looked at said the Toxic is way ahead of all other 280X cards on the market.

Should i get the V X or give it a week (i really don't mind waiting)

Cheers all

Yeah but what I'm really asking would be is the Toxic really that much better than the V X?

I saw some benches that had it very close to a 780 but I'm struggling to believe its really that fast?

Well the 280X is only really a re-badged 7970 and a 7970 is what? 10-15% behind a stock 780? If the Toxic is highly overclocked then it isn't going to be far away from the 780.

Trueaudio is defo worth waiting for.

Damn i hate buying pc parts, it seems any money spent is regretted within weeks.

Guess i will do more research and if that does indeed have substance then i will hold out for a few weeks more.

Can do all the research in the world, from unboxing to benchmarks, but yeah, a few weeks later u think 'if I had waited one more week...' Ahh well...
Could even wait for a non ref 290x haha... Use the extra time to save up some more money =)

For those who care heres an update.

Turns out i couldn't wait for the Toxic and after much research i went for the MSI Gaming 3G. It was either that or the Sapphire VaporX but in most reviews the MSI slightly pips it.

Have it installed right now and its working great. Max settings in BF4 and really smooth gameplay. Haven't measured FPS yet, gonna OC the card a bit now and then use Afterburner to do an FPS test.

Overall i'm really happy with the card, my Firestrike score has more than doubled (from 3200 to 7200) so thanks to all you guys who answered in this thread and my other one too. :D

I am currently on a 6870 as well and considering the 280x.

Looks like it offers about double the performance then judging by your firestrike score?

If I have a Xonar Essence ST and a 3770k, am I really going to need TrueAudio? Am also tempted to go with the Toxic 280X, but if a revised version is around the corner.....

Sure does, if fact a bit more. Heres the results of both cards on the exact same system, only change was the GPU.

Both tests where carried out using AMD Catalyst 13.11B7, 3D Mark shows the R9 280X as a 7970.

Firestrike using XFX 6870

Firestrike using MSI R9 280X

Firestrike Extreme using MSI R9 280X

Looks like I should get a similar score then with my i5 760.

With my 6870 the highest I got is 3,368, with the 6870 overclocked of course.

Double the performance then, that's great thanks for that :D

I'm surprised that after doing a lot of research you would pick the MSI one. Did you not read the reports of overheating and coil whine with it then? Also do you know if it has the updated BIOS that is supposed to fix the heat issues? When I heard about the 280x's I thought right if I get one I'm going to get an MSI Twin Frozr one as I've been happy with the TF3 on my 570, but those reviews put me off it.

Just a heads up for anyone considering it:

I was also in the same boat waiting endlessly for the TOXIC edition to come into harbour, so I give up and go for a Powercolor 280X...

Bad idea. The coil whine is horrendous, I can't overclock my monitor any more (well 10Hz higher doesn't count, when I was comfortably at 120Hz before with my GTX660) and the drivers suck. Going from Nvidia Experience to Catalyst was like going back to 2008 and my 4830. Bought a 780GTX Super Jetstream from Palit and am waiting on that.

By the way the performance on the card is quite strange as well. It pumps out the fps the benchmarks claim it does, but movement and motion in games is - unbelievably - actually a step back from my 660. The 660 could play at uncomfortably high resolutions and yet stayed smooth albeit slow. At 1440p the card churns out a... fast, high fps, but in a slightly stuttery/juddery (it's hard to describe exactly) uncomfortable way. It's just odd. Needless to say Powercolor can get stuffed.

Im holding off buying a new card at the moment due to the amount of constant changing going on right now.

Initially i was going to get the 280x Toxic to replace my trusty old 6950 Toxic, however i am tempted now to wait for the 290 non X, with that said though, im going to wait until a week before xmas and see how the land lies then, hopefully the markets settled down and should be a good few bargains to be had, plus the newer revisions of the 280x's will be out and people will have benched those too.

Hmmm, apparently the newer 280Xs will not have the OC headroom as the current crop, as per Gibbos online chat:

Hi there

Just had a conversation with one of AMD's board partners in China, this is the conversation:-

[08:37:20] CHINA: yes, new shipment from AMD will be XTL instead of XT2
[08:40:39] GIBBO: what is the exact difference please?
[08:41:34] CHINA -: well, i do not know know exactly what is the difference
[08:43:12] GIBBO: Please try to find out m8
[08:43:23] CHINA -: ok ok
[10:11:03] CHINA -: Mate, just checked. There is no difference on the specification between XT2 and XTL. The only difference maybe that the overclockability of XT2 is better than XTL.
[10:14:27] GIBBO: why is that m8?
[10:14:30] GIBBO: different power design?
[10:14:53] GIBBO: Will XTL feature the new HD sound found on R260X and R290's ?
[10:15:21] CHINA: no, XTL does not support True Audio
[10:15:55] GIBBO: Why do you think it won't clock as well?
[10:16:35] CHINA: well, i got this from my product development people
[10:17:12] CHINA: maybe related to the screening
[10:17:37] GIBBO: so in short current version is better for OC then
[10:17:48] CHINA: you are correct

Seems that current R280X are using the full blown HD 7970 GHz chip and the new XTL version will be a lower cost design which gives the same performance out the box, but won't have the OC headroom of the current chip.

The newer revisions of the 280x are going to be less overclockable apparently:
