Getting 5.1 Sound Working With New TV

Just bought myself an LG OLED TV's and trying to get UHD resolution with 5.1 sound from the PC in my office to the new TV.

I have a 980Ti which has an HDMI 2.0 cable coming directly from the back of the card into an HDMI 2.0 socket on the TV.

It recognises the resolution correctly @ 3840x2160 @ 60hz however when I change the sound output in Windows 10 to the LG TV, I only have the option of 2 channel stereo sound.

I know the card works okay because if I use my AV AMP's 4k passthrough I can select multi-channel PCM etc, the downside is the passthrough is 4k @ 30hz which is a deal breaker.

Anyone know why it wont give me the option to select 5.1 out (using optical) in Windows when I connect the HDMI directly to the TV bypassing the AMP?

Cheers

Can the TV even decode 5.1?

I thought they would only do 2.0 (when plugging sources directly into the TV)

Same happens to my LG monitor that has speakers and I use DP... the LG only does 2.0 so cant select 5.1

The HDMI cable from the graphics card needs to go to the receiver and then from the receiver to the TV.

If it works at 60hz directly and not when connected from the receiver then i'm afraid the receiver doesn't support pass through @ 60hz?

When you connect it directly to the TV it only shows 2 channel because the TV is only 2 channel.

I have the same problem although with different equipment.

Tv LG 65LA965w

AMP Pioneer VSX 923

The only reason I can find for it is down to the TV only being a 2Ch audio device, despite all the wizardry in the TV Windows only see's it as a stereo device.

My issue is made slightly worse as the HDMI cable length needed is too much for a 4k signal so it defaults to 1080p. I only use it for movies watching so not the end of the world.

TV unless it has 5.1 or similar processing will show as stereo. It might have an HDMI ARC enabled port which if your amp supports ARC you could use. Alternatively (as i do) my TV supports optical output of DD/DTS/PCM back to my amp. So i've mapped the incoming optical in channel on the amp to a given input defined as TV. It means any sound content from the TV from whatever source is sent to the amp to process / deal with.

Actually yeah that makes sense, the tv only has 2-speakers so wht would they put 5.1 in it.

So basically I need to get the sound source from the pc to the amp via a different method than hdmi like optical?

Both the tv and amp have arc ports yes, how could I use this to achieve what I want?

Thanks for all your input lads

take an optical cable to your amp from the tv, sorted. Make sure if you have any options assignable on the TV to the output port it is not on PCM or the TV will play with the signal and you'll not get the untouched digital signal you want.

Optical is limited to it's bandwidth capability, think it's 2 channel pcm, so if you only use dts 5.1 or dolby digital you'll be ok but it won't be able to decode dts hd audio master..

Your weak point is the amp as it doesn't have a hdmi2 port for 60hz.

Can someone explain how when I play something off of the media player or a memory stick and output it via optical from the TV to the AMP it DOES play in either DTS or Dolby Digital?

The PC is only Seeing the TV.
The TV is passing through a signal to the AMP.

The PC will not let you select other audio sources as it sees 2.0
You can do it with something else like a hdmi switching box inbetween, sometimes. But its easiest to just run a cable from the PC to the AMP. Either get a splitter for the HDMI cable (if they exist?) or just run analogue?

If it is just audio from any device, my TV just passes it through to the AMP, so yes I get full 5.1 Dolby digital and yet the moment there is any image involved it processes it and only sends it in 2 channel stereo.
