Hi there, we've got a Nintendo DS here and we're having trouble getting it online. we just want to basically connect it so we can share wii points etc... when we currently try to connect to out wifi point it effectively just sits there trying to connect and never does. i've read around the nintendowifi.com site and it says that we need a wifi enabled game in there, but i've also seen that you can put Opera on them. Is this possible?

You may need to drop your AP down to 802.11b mode to get it connect, and/or disable security.

Im gonna change my protection to WEP, but my brother is worried it will cause it to lose all the settings that we have already on the double protection, will I have to make new settings for WEP and then redo the settings for double protection?

Double protection?

You need to be on WEP to allow the DS to connect via a router. It doesn't work full stop with WPA. I'm hoping the Buffalo router I've ordered will allow me to use WPA for laptops/Wii/anything else and AOSS for the DS. That would be ideal.

If you're stuck with WEP, you can always hide the SSID, only allow certain MAC addresses to connect, turn the wifi off after certain hours etc. I'm no security expert, but I think you can make WEP reasonably safe to prevent all but the most determined of hackers.

If you still have problems, you might find that you need to upgrade the firmware on your wifi router, or it might not work at all if you really unlucky.

Opera is available on the DS, but it is not something you download, you have to buy it and it comes on a DS card.

What game are you trying to play?

Okay, so we currently have the WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES] protection, now... can I read somewhere the DS can connect to either WPA or WEP, but I can't. Do I have to allow the DS mac address? I'm not too sure what I'm talking about. What will be different if I change to WEP?

What do you mean by sharing Wii points?

Opera is essentially a game (ie: it comes on a cart), which you'll need to buy in order to go online. Unfortunately, it's supposed to be a bit slow, and expensive, for what it actually is.

Have you got any Wifi games you could try?

Remember the DS can only use WEP as a form of protection and it uses 'B' as opposed to 'G' (so it's a bit slower). Some routers need to be put into 'B' mode to work, or at the very least 'B + G' mode.

If you've set your router/AP to G-only or are using WPA, then it won't work.

Also, I don't think there's actually anything to do using the DS's wifi unless you've got a game that has wifi.
