I should be getting a new game tomorrow, and gta4 is really drawing me in... just how bad is the performance.... I've got a

4850 512
4gb ram
e2180 @ 2.8- going to clock it to 3-3.2 tonight
@ 1280x1024

i know you hate these threads but everybody needs an opnion sometime..

you should be fine tbh....i think too many were expecting 60-70fps with max settings.
but the game is playable at 30fps so just lower the sliders until u hit around that figure.
i think san andreas was limited to 30 and that was fine

Go for it, i was put off for a while with all the negative attention the game got. Got it, rig isnt as good as yours but the game runs surprisingly well. Just finished it and loved it, being able to switch from mouse and keys to 360 pad at any time is superb.

I get annoyed at the fps lag at 1920x1200 with low settings gtx 280 and e6600 at 3.74ghz. Quad would probably do it good

yes you should be able to run it ok, i can run it maxed out even with my gfx at stock (getting a gtx soon :))

as mentioned above, the game really is more cpu intensive, which is why i get around 35-45fps on max, because my quad is overclocked quite high.

Overclocking your cpu will help, but if you wanted max settings its also best to have a gfx card with more vram (1gb or higher) - this is only if you want to run at higher resolutions - further draw distance etc.

A duo overclocked at 3.2ghz is only 6.4ghz, where as a quad at 3.2ghz is 12.8ghz - its a massive difference.

But this doesnt mean you have to buy new cpu's and whatnot, your gfx card is really good, and your cpu should be fine, id suggest overclocking your cpu and then your gfx card, as long as you know the limits of your hardware ;)
