Getting a lot of clunking and noise from my HDD

It is difficult to say from that limited information but it doesn't sound good (pardon the pun). Have you tried running Speedfan or similar to check what the SMART analysis says or the manufacturers drive health tools, available from the manufacturers website (Maxtor use Maxblast, Seagate use Seatools etc)? :)

We have been getting clunk-squeak, clunk-squeak from my mums HD for a while (apparently) and it died on its arse today, so I would guess yours is on its last legs too.

I had a 2nd hand maxtor that made really loud clunking noises for the 2 years I used it as my main drive - apart from being noisy full stop, I also used to get very loud "thunk" noises, similar to the ones you get when you access a floppy (remember those!)

It never failed (it's sitting on a shelf somewhere) and the SMART stuff never showed up any worrying trends

The really good thing about all this was that it got me thinking about backing up, and I quickly developed a very healthy back up routine

So first - back up you important data, or if you can take an image of the disk, and next install some SMART reading software and monitor the condition. In the meantime keep backing up regularly, which you should be doing anyway

If a HDD starts to make noises it didnt before, its not a good sign either way, wether it lasts another 2 years or not.

Backup your data and get it replaced under the warranty if applicable, or if not, then buy a new drive.

Current drives are nice and quiet, and faster..... go on, give yourself an excuse for a new one..... just avoid Maxtor... ;)

*Awaits the usual 'Get Seagate' 'Get Samsung' comments*

Sorry about the ltd info but i was posting as it was clunking etc really loud!!

My computer started hanging and the screen kept freezing. I ain't switched it on since so I am guessing it is definatly on it's way out. I have a 2nd HDD WD 320gb SATAII that I use for storage.

The HDD that has died is my old IDE 80gb 2mb cache hitachi lol!!

As this drive was only used for programs/OS which HD do you reccommend to replace it?

Baring in mind it is used for programs only and doesn't really need to be a monster!

Does it actually function? Mine wouldn't even get past POST when it went, took it into college and my tutor pulled apart one of the college computers and stuck it in to diagnose and it just clicked constantly.

I would recommend either Samsung or Seagate, are you going for IDE?
