Getting a new network sorted.

Hi everyone

I ( at the moment ) have a wireless network, which connects my PC and 360 to it. It is just a cheapo thing, and it cuts out a lot.
You usually know the saying cheap bad.

I am also on bulldog internet for now ( just want to warn everyone, NEVER use them ) which willbe changed to some lovely BE there once i move house ( maybe before )
You wanna hope your not a cable and wireless customer lol, they didn't tell the customers that they were took over.

This is where i get my problem. I really want the fastest speeds, which means ADSL2+ right ? Thats fine, but wouldn't i need to go wired for flawless connecion, fastest speeds ? If so, what wire would i use ?
Ethernet cat5e / cat6 cable

<F0rb> said:
Can i have wireless and wired at the same time ?
Yep, sure can.

Finally, could someone suggest me a router, wire and anything else i might need ?
How far will devices be away from the router? (wireless)

according to the be website, you get a free wireless router when you sign up. can you wait until then? :)

I would wait. Get the BE router. its free.

Umm.. i am not to sure about this, but i may use it in the garden occassionally so.. 10-20m max ?

Just after the fastest possible, and want to use the full 20mb i can get ( or around that )

Have you checked your likely speed with BE already?

Always worth doing that so you don't get any disappointments when it goes live.

The BE Box they provide does have both wireless and wired support but it is not considered to be all that good wireless.

Worth trying though before you go spending money.

I have checked, and thats why i said around 20mb. Nice fast speeds here :)

I need this soon really, as i won't be switching for a few months at least, and i want it setup for then.

I would guess you can pick up much better kit by buying it.

I have been looking at the 270mb netgear adsl2+ on here, and that looks nice but i think wired would still be faster. What is the best wired and wireless router with the fastest speeds ( adsl2+ would be needed )

I hae seen some nice cat6 cable to use aswell.

Thats a nice router, but I sold it because I went totally wired. Gigabit.

No point going cat6 - it's more expensive, it's not as easy to route as cat5e and it'll give you zero advantages at all. Just get 5e unless you're lucky enough to get them at the same price.

What router have you got now ?

It would be nice to have wireless, for laptops but not essential. I don't know much about this, but i am sure i need wireless N ( if wireless ) 10/100/1000 for fast fill sharing and speed. adsl2+ for the 24mb speed.

Am i right ? i want the fastest and most non interuptable i can. fast file sharing would be best.

I bought a simple 10/100 router wired (THOMSON ST546). Uplinked to a 10/100/1000 8 port gigabit switch (Netgear).

is this the best thing to do ?

i want 10/100/1000 as i hear this will give faster transfer speeds ?

Can you suggest any router ?

My cable is through the walls with networking points on the walls. Goes back to a central location where my switch sits routing off to the BT master socket direct via ethernet. Thats where my ADSL router sits.

You tell us one you like and the ocuk users will advise.

Yes I would definitely suggest getting an ADSL2+ router of some sort and then a seperate gigabit switch. This will give you more flexibility (as there aren't many routers out there with inbuilt gigabit switches) so it'll open up your options a lot more. Gigabit kit is dirt cheap as well. As I mentioned in my post above, cat5e cable is all you need and it'll do gigabit speeds no problem.

Wireless is only going to be 54mbit or 270mbit if you get the N kit. Bear in mind that if you're using a laptop they'll need a card that supports the N standard/draft standard (possible if it's a very new laptop, but not that likely). For this reason it's probably not worth splashing out the extra on a device that does faster than 54mbit wireless.

What if i got this :

Product Description: NETGEAR GS608 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch - switch - 8 ports

RAM: 1 MB
Ports Qty: 8 x Ethernet 10Base-T, Ethernet 100Base-TX, Ethernet 1000Base-T
Data Transfer Rate: 1 Gbps
Data Link Protocol: Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet
Communication Mode: Half-duplex, full-duplex
Features: Full duplex capability, auto-sensing per device, auto-uplink (auto MDI/MDI-X), store and forward

› See more technical details

And then went and got a router. Would the router matter for speeds ? does this switch handle that ? so would a cheap netgear router do, or do i need a good one ?

All i am looking for is someone to say " You needs this router/s and this switch with this cable for the fastest speeds" or something similar.

I want fast transfers between computers ( 1gb ? ) to take advantage of the high speed internet adsl2+ would be needed, and i need 4-8 ports

In my opinion, if you want to add wireless functionality I would have your network like this.

54G Wireless > Gigabit Switch > Wired Workstations (Wireless Laptops).

Make sure the router is ADSL2+ capable. Thats all. Have a look at the netgear range, linksys e.t.c.

Thanks, that is the sort of thing i thought. So get an adsl2+ wired router, then a gigabit switch that does 10/100/1000 and connect them together ?

I haven't bought a new laptop yet, but i will get wireless n anyway.

Remember, if you get a wifi N network, you need to have the adaptors to N standards.
