Getting a new network sorted.

Will that work ? Connect the gigabit switch to the wireless router then hardwire it to the workstations ? Then the laptop can use the wreless N from the router directy ?

Thats the same combination I used to have, great choice. You need N standard adaptors though to put into the laptops otherwise they will only operate at 54g or 102g or 125g standards (depends what the laptops have on them currently).

If i buy one, it will be a macbook pro or similar. Will have N standard built in.

Thanks for all the help mate. That setup will work well then, and give the gigabit transfer rates, high speeds and no connection losses ?

On the review page it says you got 250mb tranfers, or wern't you using the wried connection then ? i want 1000mb transfers.

Remember though, It will only give gigabit speeds if your transfering from wired desktop to wired desktop.

And also remember the desktops have to have 10/100/1000 networks cards. Otherwise your not going to get max gigabit speeds.

There are a lot of fundimentals that you have to consider.

If you however have 2 laptops at N standards, your only going to get it to the max speed that the wifi is which is 270mbs. This is also hardware dependent and how much throughput your network cards can handle/processor/motherboard e.t.c.

What I can suggest you do is do a diagram with each device on your network and put on the max speed transfers you will get.

For example (without diagrams)

Desktop To Desktop (Wired) (10/100/1000) (Only if you have gigabit cards on each pc routing via the 10/100/1000 netgear switch. (This results in gigbit speeds)

Desktop To Laptop (Wireless) (270mb/s) (Only if you have a gigabit network card on the desktop and a 270mb/s N standard wifi card on the laptop

Laptop To Laptop (Wireless) (270mb/s) (Only if you have a N standard network card on both the laptops)

You will never get 1000mb transfer rate using wireless N standard. This is because it can only handle upto 270mb/s.

You will only get MAX speed throughput on the desktops as they are gigabit speeds.

The wireless would get a MAX of 270mb/s if you have a N network (wirelessly)

The desktops will be routed from the switch with cat6. this will give 1gb speeds won't it ?

Desktop to Desktop will achieve gigabit speeds.

The setup you said will achieve max to this day using that equipment.

You will only achieve gigabit speeds only if your network card is gigabit.
