Good evening,

I'll be picking up my phone upgrade tomorrow from the carphone warehouse.

I currently have a Nokia 6230 which has served me well. The biggest let down of this phone was it's camera.

I am currently going for the Sony Ericsson W800i as I can get it for free on my upgrade unless someone can suggest to me a better phone?

Thanks.

Camera wise I would say that's the best until the 3megapixel camera phones come along.
Depends what other features you were considering?

Thanks for your reply.

I think I would use the music function as I have a 1gb memory stick that I use for my PSP which has a lot of mp3's on it. I'm figuring that I could just swap the memory cards around everytime I want to play the PSP or when I am going into uni

I'm sure I've heard there's a formatting problem with doing that :/ But I'm not 100% certain, make sure you ask tomorrow!

Personally I use the 512mb stick included with the phone and it's great, can still store about 120 songs on it and it's really handy. I bought the phone as an upgrade for my phone, camera and mp3 player lol. So it's certainly been value for money!

Never used the video recording facilities yet though.

Theres a 512 memory card included?!!! I could almost put my life on it that I saw it advertised as having 32mb or 64mb but certainly not 512mb. I sincerely hope you're right. I will see tomorrow. That would be a bonus. :)

Most definitely a 512mb card :)
Mine came like that and I can guarantee all the w800i phones in the two branches of carphone warehouse I work at, come with a 512mb card. It's a great bonus :D
The phone's got 34mb of internal memory plus the 512mb card.

Over inflated link about it: http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/co...lay?S=40&PN=MONTHLY&filter_partModel=SOEW800I
Thanks for your help Haly, I must have misread the details

I can't wait to pick up this phone tomorrow :)

Haly, I don't suppose you could shed some light on my other thread that I have in this same section of the forum?

Thank you.

it's a great phone, I was very pleased when I got mine :D

Re your other thread, as we don't unlock phones, I don't know much about it I'm afraid. Your best bet, and what I've done in the past with my phones, is find a local shop that does it. You might be able to ask in the shop tomorrow to see if they know somewhere, I know where I am always recommend the same shop that do unlocks efficiently and for a decent price, usually £10 which you should be able to recoup when you sell it on.

I definately remember unlocking my other old old phone using a special program which someone had made on here, but it must be long gone for whatever reason. It sounds as though it might be a little bit of a hassle getting it unlocked. I shall enquire about it tomorrow, but if it involves any hassle then I think I will just sell it.

Thanks for all your help Haly ;)

I'd definitely try to get it unlocked if you can, be able to sell it for more then :) Sorry i can't help more with it though.

And np, enjoy the phone :)

Diasaster! :(

I went to the carphone warehouse today with my uncle (because technically it is his phone as he pays the bill etc - I just use it lol :p ). Told the person at the desk that I was looking to upgrade my phone and they told me that I would have to pay £189.99!! :o because I was a C class customer as I had only been with Orange for one year (but also because of my tarrif)! I have never ever heard of this before and I have never had a problem upgrading my phone with other contract networks. I just couldn't believe it and neither could my uncle.

My uncle phoned up Orange and was prepared to threaten to leave them in order to get a better/cheaper tarrif and the W800i. They offered him the W800i for £39.99! Which I suppose it better than £189.99. But I turned up expecting to get it for free. I really badly wanted to get the phone today as I am going back to university on Sunday which now means that the phone is going to have to be sent out to my university address and I will probably end up throwing the box out as It'll be hard to get home. Not good when I will probably be selling the phone this time next year.

Anyway, My uncle is going to get back to Orange tomorrow and I will let you know how we get on.

Thanks.

That sounds about right sadly :/
The most annoying thing is, if you were to sign up for a new contract with Orange you'd probably (not 100% certain b/c it depends on the tariff you're on) get it for free.
Just the way it works sadly :(

Yeah, my uncle said that upgrades should be decided on how much you pay (bill wise - not tarrif wise adding that we're currently paying too much already!) I would tend to agree with him on this one as well.

I think I could have gotten it free but it would have meant changing my tarrif to the £35 per month one which my uncle was not prepared to do (I think I am right in saying that).

Ah well, I shall see how we get on tomorrow. But it just goes to show that it can pay off massively if you just phone up your network provider and ask them what the best deal they can give you is instead of going back to where you bought the phone.

I shall post back tomorrow.

Thanks.

Depending on how much it bothers him, I'm fairly sure (Half asleep :o) that O2 and T Mobile are currently doing some good deals for around £20-25 a month contracts where you get a free w800i.
He could have course take his number with him if he gets the PAC from Orange.

Just depends how keen he is on that idea :) It's what I did though.

Thanks again for your quick replies Haly. I will check up on that deal tomorrow in case there is a problem getting the phone for £39.99 (which my uncle does not mind paying for - as we're getting a great deal for a £349.99 phone :p )

Hello mate,

Head over to the orange webpage and you can get the w800i for free on the £25/month up contracts. If you currently pay £30/month you could go for one of their £30 direct deals and get half price line rental thrown in for three months also.

Hope this is of some help :)

If you're prepared to settle for a new number than cancel with Orange and then start again with them.
Buy directly from Orange via the website as there are better deals to be had that way.
I've been through similar with Orange just recently and funnily enough with the W800i.
(I was upgrading from an old Samsung that I'd had for 15 months and I'd been an Orange customer for around 10 years and couldn't get what was in my eyes a fair deal - the same price upgrade as a new customer would have to pay).

Anyway, in the end I purchased from the O2 student shop.
£5 for the W800i on the £19 per month (50 Minutes, 200 Text, 1MB, 12 month) package.
You've got the added advantage of actually being a student (I'm 30 and haven't set foot in a place of eduction for a few years, but for some reason O2 don't check student purchases online).
These days I believe that you don't even need to go through the Student online shop to get the W800i for free on O2 even on the cheapest tarrif - you can also port your existing number over.
