Hey gents i'm not going to waste your time so i'll be brief. I'm buying my friends Sony GDM FW900 monitor off him for very cheap and it works perfectly. Since it's recommended resolution is something like 1920x1200 would the image seem all stretched and low quality if i put it something like 1440x900 or 1280x800 (Other 16:10 resolutions it supports) Yes i know the image quality won't be as good obviously because it's a lower resolution, my question is if iused a lower resolution like the ones stated would the image look distorted or stretched? The reason im asking this is because i don't like to play at really high resolution because my video card is not too good. Yes i know CRT's don't have native resolutions like LCD's do but i'm just confused about the whole thing so help would be nice. I know a fair amount when it comes to computers and stuff but never really caught up with monitors. Thanks for your time.

CRT's are fine at displaying any supported resolution, you won't get any stretching and the image won't look as blurry or stretched as it would on a LCD.

The Sony GDM FW900 is a great monitor, but it is huge!

I really, really wish I had never got rid of mine now :(

Don't worry about what res you run at - the FW900 is just an amazing display whatever the resolution. I've known people snap them up just to keep as spare parts for the one they already have, they are that good.

Oh, it's huge and very heavy too!

Yeah, i used to have a 21" Sony Trinitron and it just couldn't be beaten for the quality. There dirt cheap to pickup these days on eBay, you just tend to have to pick them up due to there weight.

If you could get one with dual inputs i'd prob be tempted to go back... well maybe not :D

just want to hijack briefly - space is't an issue for me and thanks to a certain retailer I need a monitor to run on my new i7 gaming rig. A local (10 mins away) pc recycler has one of these for sale.

How much should I be looking to pay? How do the connect - ad says HD15 which I presume is the trusty d-sub - any noticeable loss using this connection compared to dvi (I have a 4890, soon to be 5870x2).

thanks

craig

New these went for £800 + you tend to see these from anything between £0 - £90. You will most likely need a DVI-VGA adapter (unless it has DVI?) .

It might not seem as sharp as a LCD, but it will be better quality and the colors will amaze you!

In terms of image quality, it is reputed to be one of the best monitors ever to have been made.

I wouldn't mind one but the problem I have is the power consumption.

My own Sony 19" CRT monitor uses around 100W and I believe the Sony 24" uses more than that.

 170w of goodness, will compensate and remove the light bulb in the study.

Thanks for the input, I'd set my self a budget of around £75, thinking I should recoup that when my monitor from here finally arrives. If not it'll partner the xbox in the den and finally get the dang thing out of the lounge.

Should have it tomorrow pm if there open and the price is reasonable. I'm hoping that not having to pay £55 for shipping means I can comfortably out bid other buyers. Might not fit in the car though... Looked at a cnet archive review and it looks awesome. Never thought I'd get this excited over a monitor :) Maybe it was meant to be...

This thread makes me want to hunt another FW900 down.

Yet even though there were amazing monitors, I can't help but think I would come away slightly disappointed compared to my 24" LCD now.

I think I will leave my rose tinted glasses firmly in place :p

You wont be dissapointed. You will be impressed. ;)

The problem with the FW900 though is the sheer size of the thing, as well as the high power consumption.

I'm a sucker for image quality, but even I would have to think twice about having such power hungry, large monitor.

just keep rubbimg it in :(

realy thought that one had got my name written all over it - literslly 10 mins doen the road at a seller operating a business out of a lock up. I can't believe it made £150. I will rofl my ass off if the buyer thought they were buying a lcd...

LOL No.

Right now there is a 23" LCD going for around £115. If I were to buy another monitor right now (to run alongside my Sony 19" CRT), thats what I would go for. The extra power usage of the Sony CRT is prohibitive.

For movies, I have a Panasonic Projector, Pansonic Plasma and the Sony CRT, in my lounge. In my bedroom, I have a DGM 24" PVA screen. So, I have all the "quality" screens I could want. If do buy another screen, it would be to aid me when programming, hence a cheapo big screen will suffice.
