What are the rules for this? As my Dad is due to get a replacement this summer, and has to order the car in about a month, and doesn't really like the selection of cars avaliable at the moment.

He gets his company car seperate from the rest of the company, so he gets free rien of what he can get, but the rest get a list, with the most expensive car on there a E90 320d ES (£24000) but he doesn't want to be taxed so highly on it, as there will be 2 members of the family at uni.

Currently he owns a Mercedes A class 170d, which is very slow, but very economical and very cheap on tax. He wants a car that does 0-60 in around 10s and less, does about 50mpg and its emmisions as close to the 18% barrier as possible, and to be £17000.

He is looking at the previous gen Volkswagen 1.9 GT TDI 150ps.

Thanks, Neb.

Even with a used car he will get taxed on list price.

Does he have the option of a car allowance?

I keep telling to ask, but right now he gets a good deal. He only pays £800 or so a year for the car which is basically the cost of him getting insured and paying for the service.

He really likes the new golf but he really prefers the older one, which is more powerful and has less emissions.

So he can get a second hand company car?

Possibly - will be worth asking if there's a pool list which has cars with unfinished contracts. We have one at work (Masterlease) and there's the odd Mk4 that pops up.

Grrr! I was looking at an older What car magasine and forgot that the Emmission bands go down every year, so the was cheaper golf isn't a lot cheaper (still would be a bit though.)

Anyone recomend a new car that fits the requirements?

It fits in the company budget, but not my dads one with what the future holds.

Also, I know the Honda Civic would be the perfect car, but my Mum doesn't like the "feel" of it.
