Thinking of getting a "cheap" V8 for weekend drives and socialising. Budget is max £10k.

Having looked at AutoTrader I can get a BMW 540i 04 plate for £6k and there's an Audi S5 there too. Any recommendations?

I'd go for something like a Monaro too, i don't see how you could go wrong with one of them. Much simpler and less likely to encounter eye watering bills than an aging German car and if you wanted to start modding the LS platform is massively supported.

If it's a 'weekend' car, on the assumption that means practicality is not so much of a concern, i'd sooner look at things that aren't exec saloons with big engines in.

Thinking Mustang, older Jag XK etc.

edit - though a quick look suggests older Mustangs have held value far better than I thought and so probably aren't achievable at £10k

I doubt you can - for 2004 there was only the 545i. The 540i appeared in 2005 as a the lower power V8 option alongside the 550i.

I cannot imagine why you'd want any of them as a weekend car. It's really not what they are for.

Stay away from BMW V8s of that vintage unless you have deep pockets for repairs. The N62 engine is well known for being a complete pig no matter what it's installed in. Sounds good and goes good though.

I owned a BMW 650i for a couple of years was a great car, sounded awesome. My only regret whilst owning it was not making it louder…..
Should definitely own a V8 at some point in your life.
