Getting a visa for China

We're visiting China in November for 3 weeks to see some friends who work there and they've told us we need to get a visa but couldn't offer any more advice as theirs were sorted through work.

Apparently agencies do this to avoid the faff so I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations from applying before? Apparently we should be able to get an invite via my friend's work so it should just be help with the visa application that we need.

Which is the recommended service as per the chinese consulate. Interestingly I did notice that sometimes other agenices can be cheaper but the above has always got my passport back to me within 2 weeks and I have never had a problem.

Easiest is by post.

Fill in the form and send off with the required payment and documentation. I got mine back within a week or so.

I think if is just a tourist VISA ( they could be 3 years as standard now) you can also use the manchester or edingburgh office... The London one can get a bit busy around Chinese New Year, or at least so I have been told.
