MOT is due end of June however needing a few small things done and garage says why don't you just get an MOT check first. I said ok.

How will this work, I'm sure there's some kind of rule about getting early mots like this, i don't want to lose a few months of mot until end of June etc.

If I got MOT done now, I think I have up to end of June to get any repairs done is that right then it will auto pass end of June?

It'll tell you on your current MOT certificate what the earliest date you can get the test done without losing any time on it.

You can get them to check over it before it expires without them putting anything on the system. I guess that's what they meant.

If you tell them to do a proper MOT and it fails on something, then the current MOT is void even if you do it early. You'll have to fix it to drive it away legally.

Only for a Dangerous failure.

Driving a vehicle that’s failed
You can take your vehicle away if:

  • your current MOT certificate is still valid
  • no ‘dangerous’ problems were listed in the MOT
Otherwise, you’ll need to get it repaired before you can drive.

You can get an MOT up to a month early and still keep the full validity IE 13 months. If you do it earlier than this, then you'll get a fresh 12 month MOT starting from the date of test.

Sounds like a pre MOT check, e.g. check all the bits that tend to fail on an MOT so when you come to MOT it in a few months it will pass sans and bulbs that might have gone in the mean time.

I got an early MOT done today and it failed saying headlamp levelling device nearside rear broken the lever had snapped listed down as a (major defect repair immediately)

I asked the Kwik fit guy wether I could drive as my previous one dosnt run out until next month and he said its rather a grey area and couldnt give me a yes or no answer.

However ive just read this article which says I cant drive it only for repair is this true?

I might be wrong but it is no different to driving a vehicle normally with a major defect - it doesn't invalidate your existing MOT so to speak but you may get done by the police if they stop you, etc. completely unrelated to the MOT and will prevent you having a valid MOT once the existing one runs out.

And if an accident/incident happens where that defect is part of the incident and you were aware of it due to the MOT then you'd get the book thrown at you.

Thanks it seems to state here the fault must be listed as dangerous and then you cant drive which mine isnt only listed as major.

Additional factor if you drive it and have an incident where the defect is relevant insurance may refuse to pay out. If it doesn't generally affect day to day driving there is nothing illegal about driving the vehicle as long as you are careful as appropriate.

EDIT: The garage will likely be wary giving you a direct answer to avoid any liability.

Would you say if I had a full service a week before this should have been flagged?

To be fair what they found was legitimate my mobile mechanic come this morning had a look showed me the picture also.

Ordered the part from VW getting that fitted and then another test.

However what is frustrating is no free re test and they couldnt repair it even guy said it could be glued at Kwikfit however it was £31 test.

On the other hand my cars have only ever gone to places like that for their MOTs mainly because they're cheap and always have space, never had one fail or had any daft advisories added.
An MOT is probably about all I'd trust them with though.
