Getting an expired domain

Hi guys,

There’s some domains I’m after buying (and they aren’t currently hosting an active site etc) and it looks as if the current owner has decided not to renew them.

The .co.uk
123-reg say that it’s taken, and doing a WHOIS on it through 123-reg gives:
Registered on: 05-Feb 2006
Renewal date: 05-Feb-2010
Last updated: 25-Feb-2008
Registration status: Renewal Required.

Soo, what’s with it being 2+ weeks past the renewal date but being “taken”? Have they got a ‘oops you forgot to renew it’ grace period or something before I can buy it? And is there anyway I can increase my chances of getting it (pay someone to be hammering F5!) or something?

Cheers

EDIT: Don't know if it makes the procedure any different, but I can't see there being any other interest in the domains apart from myself and the expired owner (who wasn't doing anything with them!)

.UK drop catching is more specialised than standard .com drop-catching.

If it's a premium name, there will likely be lots of people trying to grab it within 0.1 seconds of it becoming available again. :o

Check out www.acorndomains.co.uk

It should drop sometime between the 8th of May and the 15th of May by my reckoning.

Thanks, so that's basically 90-100 days from the renewal date.

@all: Is there any difference in when I could buy it through the current registrar and when I could buy it using another registrar (I'd prefer to use who I've got my others with, but would buy it with the current one and then transfer it over if it gets me it quicker), and when a 'drop catcher' could buy it?
Also, is it midnight they go up for sale?

As you can probably tell, I really want this domain but I'm hoping the facts that a) no-one really knows I want it (though the expired owner could probably guess) and b) it's only really of any use to me/the expired owner will work in my favour...

Update

Just been on 123-reg and both domains are still unavailable to buy, but the WHOIS has updated:

Guess that's another step along the way?

You should register with a domain auction site who can register it for you. There's a very high chance (read certain) that they'll get it the second it drops.

If you hafve a google around you'll see that registering domains this way is quite involved as all domains follow a (long) cycle before you can register it (if of course a domains company doesn't get it before you).

Are there any recommendations on who to use?

I'm kinda sceptical to the idea on the logic of 'They'll see my interest in it and then buy it for themselves and then pretend there's other interest in it to get more money out of me' but that might just be me being paranoid.

TBH I can't see there being anyone who would want the domain for a legit reason other than myself and the current owner - but I guess that wouldn't stop cyber squatters / domain parkers or anyone that wants to pinch some of the traffic :/

A client of mine owns a shop but got someone else who did the shops front logo etc to register the domain for the shop. The shop owner uses the domain but the guy that registered the domain for him, registered it in his own name. The domain's renewal was up a few days ago after noticing email problems with the domain.

Instead of the other guy renewing it, the shop owner wants to do it and change the registered details to his own shops so how does one go about this?

It's a .com domain so I understand its a bit more hassle. Is this something that can be sorted out quickly cause the shop's email is now down because the domain expired.

Cheers for any info.
