Getting an old monitor(Vga) to work with 290x

Hey all,

I have an old monitor which uses VGA and I've always kept using it as it's handy to have another screen.
Now I've upgraded to a 290X GPU there is no longer a VGA port and the VGA-DVI converter I have is the wrong type and I have a friend telling me I need an active one?
I'm not sure, any advice on what I need to get these to work or is it time to retire the monitor?

don't think you'd need an "active" adapter or anything....just a normal DVI ro VGA adapter should work as far as i know. maybe you just need a newer adapater/cable?

I suppose that's the main thing I wanted to know, if I do need a special one or just the dvi-d (I think) rather than dvi-i(or whatever there's like 4

)

you'd need to use a DVI-I port from the graphics card, not DVI-D. DVI-I carried analogue as well so can be converted. maybe thats your issue. are there more than one DVI port on the card? have you tried them both if so?

DVI-D is digital only, so a DVI-D to VGA would be pointless

The analog signal you want is carries by the four pins around the "blade" which appear on DVI-A and DVI-I.

Right, So It is a DL-DVI-D
Does that mean I cannot get the monitor to work with the GPU?

no, i don't think so as thats a dual-link DVI-D interface. what other interfaces are on the graphics card?

Hdmi and display port.

HDMI > VGA adaptor. Works on my 290 fine

Is is some kind of 'powered' one?
or is it one of the simple hdmi one end->vga other end?

no asking for competitor info please
Edit: sorry, was mainly looking for a brand rather than shop

no idea. the person i got the card off gave it to me. it's got no branding on it (though it does look identical to the NewLink HDMI to SVGA Adaptor).
