Getting annoyed with the way ubuntu looks :-(

Hey guys

I use ubuntu as m main OS, largely to do programming web development etc. but atm I'm in a bit of a rut, I hate the look of it.

Now I know I can go to gnome-look and download all the icons under the sun and change my GDM theme etc, but I want a GDM that jus looks styish, an icon set that includes nice looking icons for awn, the window border corner and the launcher icons.

I just struggle to achieve this feel of polished off, every icon theme has a stupidly ugly icon, or the old icon is used somewhere, and every GDM I use doesn't fit in with my background.

I guess I'm looking for guidance, whether it how you got ** desktop to look the way u want, made your own icon set? or GDM how did u do it? any good guides or tips?

GDM themes are really easy to modify or even create from scratch. find an existing one that you mostly like and see what you want to want to change. Putting a new background on one, fir instance, is usually as simple as moving the background you want into the appropriate theme's directory and changing its name to match the one referenced in the theme.

Icons are not my specialty. :p

You could always try using a different window manager to see what that's like

I recommend the *box kinds personally

I feel Linux Mint has a more stylish look to it than Ubuntu. Might not be the advice you're looking for, but you ought to check it out :)

I think I'll stick with ubuntu, only reason being I do like the OS and as far as installing goes I've not had a problem and from what I have read Mark Shuttleworth seems to be moving in the right sort of direction.

But I have decided to take your advice and work on some of my own GDM's and themes etc.

I do have a couple of questions about things I've seen other people do with their desktops that I don't know how they did it

1.) How do you change the look the top menu bar?? I'm guessing it is something in gnome-look.org I can get plenty but I can see which part it would be under

2.) Is it possible to change the colour of the multiple desktops in the bottom right hand corner of the screen?

3.) what does everyone use for widgets on their desktop? I have tried screenlets but they always seemed to be pretty buggy I just annoyed me fair too much to keep them there, is there any fix for this?

Cheers everyone

Make everything nice and transparent, get rid of the bottom bar and install cairo-dock. Pimp out compiz animations and tada, you have one swish linux box :p.

Does anyone have an icon theme that has different icons for Desktop, Documents, Music, Prictures and Videos folders?

I've tried finding out how to do this but I can't find any information anywhere about how to achieve this, anyone got any ideas?

apt-get install ubuntu-studio-theme (or somthing along those lines)

The ubuntu studio theme looks awesome - and doesn't change the default background colour to none-white (makes browsing the web a complete pain otherwise)

I was hoping to do it with the theme I'm already using, is it something I have to change in the theme rather than the icon set?

The only reason I asked for the other themes (Sorry I was unclear but meant icon themes) was so I could see what the icon is named so I could copy it to use for my icon theme

Thanks for the help though guys

Eveything you will need to change is in /usr/share/icons but i dont think its going to be that straight forward though TBH i've never tried it. :D

Just installed that Ubuntu Studio Look and it is very nice. I think I will keep it for a while :)

Though "apt-get install ubuntu-studio-look" didn't work.

A quick Google and it is: apt-get install ubuntustudio-look

One little "-" makes all the difference :)
