So,

Next year will be my second year at uni and therefore i will be moving out of halls and moving a bit further afield from the university.

This means i would have to buy a yearly bus pass to get around. These cost in the region of £300+

So i thought to myself, maybe it would be better to buy a 125cc, preferably a 2 stroke so it doesn't just plod along, instead.

I would have to do my CBT but would be able to ride a 125 after that.

And as 125's hold their value quite well i could sell it on again after my next two years.

What do you lot think of this idea?

How much is insurance likely to be seeing as i'm 19 ( will be 20 in September) and don't have any no claims.

What bikes are there to choose that are quite reliable/ easy to look after but are under about the £1000 mark.

CBT easy to do? I've heard it's basically turn up and you pass.

But yeah, just looking to get some general opinions from you lot as i know your all quite knowledgeable on the subject :)

Thanks

If you don't wanna go cheap scooter and go proper bike,t hen a 125 is perfect, Kawa YBR125 can pick up 2007 for £1k, and a lot less if you go older. Will do 100mpg, look decent and be cheap to run. Insurance, that's your problem, probably around £500 fully comp maybe, 300 TPFT and a CBT is what, £100 ish notes...?!?! Then you have a Lid, lets say £100 notes, although could get a £50 quid one... and then it's all down to safety gear you want or not... that could be another £200 notes?

CAGIVA MITO (emphasis), Honda NSR 125, Aprilia RS125, Aprilia MX/SX125, Suzuki RG125, Gilera SC125, Derbi GPR125, (old style is 2 stroke, the fat one is 4), Yamaha DT125

^ All good candidates with a range of reliability, performance and style. All pretty similar and can be found fairly cheap except for the aprilia mx/sx which sometimes are hard to find.

Take a look around see what one you like, hope this helped :)

I have a Cagiva Mito which i use to commute to college 4 days a week, decent enough fuel economy and not too hard on insurance, id say insurance would be about 400 for third party only.

Good advice, but The YBR is a Yamaha :), also theyre pretty slow but as you said, around 100mpg and bulletproof

Thanks for all the fast responses guys!

So where would be the best place to look for the bikes?

Plus is there anything to look out for when choosing the bike such as how many miles before engine rebuilds and that, and just main things to look out for.

As well as what mileage to look for

Thanks

Why do you specifically want a 2 stoke? It's a 125 it's not going to be super fast either way, I'd recommend a 4 stroke.
The only new bike you'll get for under 1K are "chinese", Lexmoto, Huoniao etc if they're looked after they're good bikes or get a second hand yammy / honda.

Update: now have about 1.6k for a bike so budget has increased a fair bit.

I just like the looks of the 125 and having them a little bit nippyer can't be a bad thing!.

I'm really liking the look of the Honda NSR 125.

Or bike's with that knid of look but don't really want an import as seem to be more trouble than they are worth.

Don't get a race rep 2 stroke 125 if you want something reliable. They may be great fun when they are working, but they tend to be quite fragile.

A scooter would be the sensible choice for your position - enough storage to hold your helmet so you don't have to carry it around all day and provides much better weather protection.

Okay, I have changed my mind! haha

Think i'm now looking at the Yamaha yzf r 125.

But having trouble finding decent ones for under £2000 and not too far away from Southampton/ Brighton

Anyone fancy taking a look :)

go for a four stroke,no expensive two stroke oil that (they tend to drink) and far more reliable,go for a cheap 125 gilera vxr scooter, cheap tax/insurance

insurance on a 2 stroke will probably cripple you i bet it's close to £1000

Insurance may be more than a 4 stroke, but its nowhere near 1000. Youll be looking at around 3-400, 500 max.

Jake dont let them put you off if you want a 2 stroke, get one. Look around on sites like comparethemarket etc for insurance as it is different for everyone.

+ comparing it to an R125 you can probably get a bike, insurance and gear for the price of the Yamaha

Yeah, that is what is putting me off, the Yamaha is quite pricey really and have seen nsr's go for 1200-1400 for good condition.

Just you guys saying 2 strokes are unreliable and that i'm not sure anymore! haha

And insurance on either bike is about 350-450 really so no real difference.

I guess it helps i'v had my full driving license for 2 years

Theyre not unreliable, they just like maintenance like piston rings every 9000 miles etc. Do it yourself and its cheap enough.

You can definitely pick something up for around 1k, look for something around 15k miles and id probably say stay away from much over 25k.

The most common 2 stroke is probably the Aprilia RS125 so take a look see what they are going for and base your budget around that, they should all be around the same price except for the supermoto styles which can be a bit more expensive

So you want a sporty bike for town use... just don't even bother.

Any commuter style 4 stroke 125 would be just as fast as the 2 stroke as town, it's not like you're going to be nailing it at 60+ around town.
