Hi all,

Basically my car has been SORN since December 09 due to me dislocating my knee and having surgery done.

I hope to start driving soon(ofc via docs orders) but my aim is in Oct (end of)

But how & what do i need to do first? I've never been in this situation before go easy on me :P

Im guessing

1 - Car insurance
2 -Tax
3 - Service / MOT

I just hope that my car can make it to the garage i know the breaks are shot and by now would have locked up.

Just wanted to make it as smooth as possible as i want it done in a day or 2 when i get the go ahead.

Insurance for car needs sorting first; then if the cars MoT has expired, then this needs to be prebooked and sorted prior to taxing, if it's still under MoT then take your docs to the Post Office and arrange the tax details.

Good luck with getting back into the driving seat :)

Hi all,

Well so far i have:

Car Insurance - Hastings Direct - at the moment i don't have the documents as i orderd this Monday
Service/Mot - Tomorrow
Breakdown cover

But whats the best way about getting car TAX?

From - Tax.gov website http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_069680

You can tax your vehicle using a V10 ‘Vehicle licence application’. The documents you have will determine whether you can get your tax disc online, at a Post Office® branch or at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) local office.

When to apply

If your tax is due to run out at the end of the month, you can renew it from the fifth day of the month.

If your vehicle has been untaxed, because you’ve just bought it, the tax disc has run out or a SORN is in force, you can tax from the first day of the month in which you apply.

If you want the tax disc to start on the first day of the next calendar month, you cannot tax your vehicle more than two days in advance.

You can tax in person at any Post Office® branch that issues tax discs.

You will need to take:

* Registration Certificate or New Keeper Supplement
* insurance certificate or cover note – must be valid when the tax disc comes into force
* valid MOT certificate - if the car or motorcycle is over three years old - must be valid when the tax disc comes into force
* the payment for vehicle tax (not needed if your vehicle is exempt from paying vehicle tax)

You can tax it now and effectively waste a month (September) or wait until October 1st and tax it from then.

It's very simple, do not overcomplicate the issue.

But dont i need insurance details? which i dont have atm as they are in transit -post

I might as well wait till Friday then

Sigh well what a mission...

Went to vauxhall at 8:30 to get mot certificate etc and thought ill leave the car with them as town post office is 10min walk

Went to town at 9am for the post office to open not having ever done this before to get tax always used it online. Anyway at the counter the guy asks for a log book (now known as registration certificate) which i had never used before so didnt know what i was looking for. Anyways ive managed to get tax now. BUT!

30 - 9 - 2011 :( WHY its the bloody 1st today! So still loosing a month regardless of the date it wasnt till i had ripped the thing untill i had noticed!

Not very good at maths (or taxing cars) are you?

What day is it today? And what day does your new tax disc expire? Oh yeah....

Yes he is?

If it went from 1st October 2010 to 1st October 2011 inclusive then he'd be getting 366 days worth of tax as he wouldn't have to have a new tax disc until the 2nd of October - think about it for a second, from todays date to the 30th September 2011 will give him a years worth of tax, going to the 1st of October would give you an extra day for free.

Or if it's better looking at it like this 1/10/10 to 30/09/11 is one years worth, 1/10/10 to 1/10/11 is one year plus one days worth.

Indeed.

Remember your VED disc says "Expires end 30/09/2010"

Yeah I realised this after posting, it expires at midnight or whenever. He's just not losing a month like he thinks he was.

Yeah i realized this after i chilled out... but lolz with the replys anyway :D

Back on the road and it feels good!
