Hi all,

Really in two minds of what to do, since I upgraded my monitor to 1440P I think I've stopped enjoying gaming, I dont seem to play as well as I used to in on line shooters like BF4 and I thought it was down to my new res and my GPU so I changed the GPU and even though there is a noticeable performance increase and I stay above 60FPS I cant help but think it doesnt feel as fluid as everything did at 1080P

Also Freesync, I'm not sure its all its cracked up to be to be honest, gaming at 1080P no Freesync and 1440P Freesync and I notice FPS drops more at 1440P with Freesync and they irritate the hell out of me, at 1080P no Freesync everything was super smooth I never noticed anything

I'm really sensitive to FPS, the higher the better for me but I dont like eye candy too so its a catch 22.

I've had my GPU a week, I'm seriously considering returning it, selling my 1440P freesync monitor and either getting a TV and turning my PC into a 1080P 60FPS Steam machine

Or

Just reverting back to 1080P and getting an RX480

Am I crazy? I just want to game again, I seem to spend most of my time messing around with settings rather than gaming and I dont enjoy it anymore.

Before anyone suggests console, no. I want at least 1080p 60fps

Could be that the old monitor was more responsive? Could be other hardware - you wouldn't have changed your mouse in the meantime?

What kind of GPU are you using? You wouldnt have inadvertently set any kind of vsync at driver level?

What card are you on? Can you overclock it? Lose MSAA? I would imagine the new res will take a bit of time to get used to

I think my old monitor was more responsive, I had it for a few years and was quite attached to it, shouldn't have sold it. That was back in March so been using 1440p since then

Mouse changed but had no choice, old one had double click issues, new one is better spec

I have a Fury, Vsync disabled in Global Profile, I will double check later but pretty sure its set to Force Vsync off in all applications

Not really interested in OCing anymore, thats just more messing about, cant really OC a Fury anyway. I only ever use 2 x MSAA at 1440P, might just switch it to off and see how I get on

I hope you have turned off Vsync and using DP 1.2a certified cable. (Cables coming with monitors are not trustworthy)

Also which monitor, gpu and cpu you have? What are your settings?
Is Freesync activated on the coontrol panel?

1440P was a move that was good for me but still not quite got it to get me back into gaming. Then I got a 1440P Asus ROG Swift and that was what I needed to get me back into gaming. I can have all the eye candy and don't notice frame drops as well but maybe you are expecting a bit much from your Fury Nitro? Also worth pointing out that changing the res will take time to get used to but well worth it in the long run.

Yes like I say Vsync is forced off for all apps in Global Profile, I will double check this later.

DP cable I use the one that came with the monitor, no black screen flicker which is the only issue a DP cable can cause as far as I know

Freesync is activated on Benq XL2730Z and Fury Nitro. CPU is 8350 at 4.2GHZ

I kinda know how you feel. I bought a 4K TV to use as a monitor, but the input lag and screen refresh made certain games unplayable, even when I was running at 1080p. Screen refresh was 60hz, but it still didn't actually 'look' like 60hz, it was not smooth at all in the transitions. Basically I stopped playing games for quite a few months.

I bought a 25" 60hz 1080p screen and gaming is great again and I'm getting back into it.

I believe Freesync will cause a small amount of input lag, which is also the case with G-Sync although I can hardly notice it (but then I'm not a competitive gamer). Have you tried it with both Freesync and V-Sync disabled on the new monitor?

Also I would try FXAA if you're worried about performance - in my experience it does not impact the FPS significantly on modern GPUs and is much better than no AA at all. It's probably as good as 4xMSAA actually.

Did you go up I size as well as resolution? If so, it's probably the bigger screen size that is making gaming feel so different.

As far as I know lots of competitive gamers use 24" screens for this reason

I think I'll try Freesync disabled and see how I get on but if my performance suddenly improves then I'm selling the monitor and going back to 1080p none freesync and returning the GPU

I need to read up on different AA types, I just always go for 2 x MSAA at 1440p

Went from 1080p 120hz to 1440p 144hz Freesync BenQ XL2730Z and my gaming has become more enjoyable.

Freesync for me has been night and day difference to how smooth my gaming has become, this coming from someone who never used to lock the frame rate down.

Performance hit isn't even that much either my testing 1440p is only around 20fps least in the games i have tested GTA5, csgo and Tomb raider.

I do wounder how much your CPU is effecting your gaming performance? The 8350 is becoming very dated now and with its weak single core performance I expect it's not holding up to the demand Battlefield 4 can put on the CPU.

Edit

I see you using MSAA try and stay away from this @1440p it's much more demanding than MSAA @1080p. Stick with SMAA and FXAA

I don't know what refresh rate that new monitor of yours is but I can tell you that 60fps (vsync/gsync/freesync which runs at 60hz) on a 144hz monitor doesn't look as smooth as on 60hz monitor.
To match fluidity of my 60hz plasma TV (frame interpolation disabled) I have to run games at about 100fps on my monitor. Obviously input lag on my monitor running even at 60hz with gsync is waaaay better than on TVs but fluidity definitely not.

I do wonder about upgrading my CPU but last time I asked about it everyone said just to keep it if its just for gaming and that wasnt that long ago

Plus I'm trying to wait for Zen

BF4 however runs nicely if you look at the stats, FPS never below 60 but when there is a large fluctuation I can definitely tell its there. I just cant put my finger on what is causing my performance to drop

Maybe I'm just getting old!

And what CPU is it.?
With better CPU you will get better minimum fps which matters the most.
I upgraded [email protected] to [email protected] and in some games I'm seeing a big boost to minimum fps running 980ti@1500mhz.
Also what I noticed is that with some games running at higher fps/hz with gsync than 60hz with vsync introduces microstutter as if the game was optimised to run best at 60hz.

Another thing to keep in mind is the freesync range of the monitor. Maybe the card is dropping outside of those boundaries and that's why you're seeing the non-responsiveness.

I was looking at a few 27'' 1440p screens, but after testing them for a few hours i simply did not see the point in upgrading at the mo.

BenQ XL2730Z is 40-144, mine drops down to 35-144
