Getting confused with PSU and ATX 3.0

Where do I start? I'm slowly upgrading my PC and looking at new PSU and case, over last few days was just catching up with tech regards to that, ATX3.0 PSU some have the newish conntector some still don't, I am a fan of corsair not going to lie but it was purchase long time ago 10+ years, most if not all the RM series or HX series still using 8pins plugs, like to have had room for future so 850w plus is ideal.

Currently 7800x3d and 3070 rtx soon to get 4080 super, I'm not one to wait for the latest greates as the technology moves to quick for me to keep up finicially so I have 2x8 pins cables going to it and 8 years old another corsair power supply which ideally want to upgrade. Will never own any xx90 series cards as is to much unless I win lotto :)

I have settled on 4000d case but looking at few builds could do with side mounted cable like the shift psu have but then I'm missing out on the new connector on PSU and less cable but looks like the standards are changing again regards that, just can't catch up :(

So after rumbling for a while what would you do?
Pick up RM850shift and have bit easier build or get sligtly cheaper MSI MPG 850w that has the newer connector but no side mounted, what I don't want to do is get a power supply that will require another cable adaptor to run to the 4080 super ect. I don't buy PSU often so don't mind spending a bit if will last like my others have.

The Corsair RM850x Shift has got the dedicated cable for a 4080. It just connects to the PSU using 2 x 8/6 pin plugs (although smaller than normal).

Don't think having a 16 pin connector would work on that PSU because you would have to bend the cable close to the connector and think that is what caused all the problems with that particular cable.
 
If you like the Corsair shift and it works well in your case of choice just buy that as it already works with the 4xxx series GPUs. Would have to double check but I think the newly revised 12+4 pin connector has shorter sense pins for better fault detection + more contact on the power pins.

No problems with a 3070 FE or 4080 FE myself but I definitely became more aware of correctly inserting the connectors as a result of the reported failures.

Up front cost is moot if you are likely to run the PSU for 6-8 years. Just buy a decent one with a long warranty. I would still be using my HX850i with my RTX 4080 except I went to a ITX PSU.
 
Corsair used to produce very good PSU but not sure if things has change, for a component to last well pass 10 years and been in multiple builds I say is value for money, not sure if RM version is actually decent? 10 year Warranty is great but I'm sure if psu takes other components corsair won't pay out for that or would they? in life you get what you pay for sort of thing and looking in to HX version is well but no side mounted cable, not a deal braker but if PSU is to long in 4000d might have problem with HDD cage, and I'm still using 2xHDD just can't shift that amount of storage to anything else unfortunately.

I think you are overthinking things completely, I have never had a PSU fail and Im on PC`s all day every day for decades

RMx SHIFT is still fine (at least, it reviews well), no worries there.

The RM850 Shift, similar to its 750W sibling, loses some performance compared to the RM850x (2021), but it is notably quieter, thanks to the FDB fan that Corsair used instead of the ML fan of the unit above. It might not meet RM850x eye-to-eye, but its overall performance is still competitive and close to the top of this category.

So far as I've seen, PSU manufacturers are case-by-case with this and generally: no they do not (it isn't like surge protectors and UPS where they sometimes provide this warranty up to a certain value). That said, Corsair have been known to offer refunds in the past.

If the PSU is labelled ATX 3.0 then it should have the 16 pin, but the revised 12v-2x6 I don't know which are shipping with those.

16pin you referring to the 12VHPWR which is been updated and called 12V-2x6.

Obviously there are problems with the 12VHPWR connector and having the upgraded cable is beneficial but looking online upgrade are done on gpu ends is well regards pins ect. So maybe having psu with dedicated 12VHPWR is not ideal as you will be stuck with it and no way of sort of upgrading that connection apart from just cable, where PSUs that using 2x8 pins to 16pin is just matter of cable.

Anyone know if the 4080super had the revised pins? Or will this be only available on 50 series cards?

Reagrds Corsair PSU looks like the newer HXI and RMx shift only ships with the revised version cable, you can buy
12V-2x6 type 4 for the other corsairs PSUs but there isn't much point me getting older style PSU then getting cable separately unless I can find the RM850x under £100

my superflower 550w blew up
and then i got a 650w evga psu and that blew up
and then amazon gave me £20 and i was able to get a 750w corsair psu and its been running nice
