My old boot drive suffered from a virus which i cleaned. However it then suffered issues with opening applications and generally was a pain in the...

I bought a new boot drive and re-installed windows etc. Now, what do you guys think of attaching the old drive for me to collect my itunes folder? Before i took the drive out McAfee said the drive was clear of any viruses.

If i don't run anything and just copy the files that i need, then scan them i guess, what are the chances of infecting the new drive and op system?

Thanks

I would hook it up as a slave drive and run a full scan on it using the likes of Avast. Then just copy across whatever you need. Providing you don't try to open any of the files or programs on the drive before doing another full scan then you should be ok. I suggest Avast as I don't rate McAfee personally :D

Thats what i was thinking, it's only my itunes folder that i need and won't open anything else and definitely wont run anything!

So you reckon attach it and run a scan straight away on it?

Well if it's just your itunes folder you will probably be ok but going from past experience I usually find myself copying a load of other stuff I want as well and thus the need to make sure the drive is free from any nasties ;)

LOL yeah i know what you mean, but i have taken the routine of having a boot disk with just os and applications and pics and stuff on other drives. But last time i did a re-install i forgot to move my itunes library to another drive

tbh, i guess the other drives are just as dangerous to my os drive as the old boot drive i am going to attach.

either way if i scan the life out of everything and do not run anything i guess i should be ok.

Another way I suppose you could do it, maybe a bit of a faff but, live linux cd, slax/ubuntu etc, copy the files to a external drive, avg do a live cd, I've never used it, but I guess you could scan the external drive.
At least that way it may give you a bit more peace of mind, just yank out the cable from the internal drive and your ready to rock.
