I'm getting Getting Error number: 0x80070002 when trying to run Windows Update.

OS: Windows XP SP2

I have already tried stopping Automatic Update Service, clearing out %windir%\softwaredistribution folder and then starting Automatic Updates Service.

Any help appreciated.

You're not running an OS that's recently gone through a Windows Repair are you? It's the latest little bug that's doing the rounds at the moment.

Not to my knowledge. No repair has been carried out on the OS and I'm the only one who uses this machine. Do you have any more info ?

I got that error message last night. I was experiencing problems with some websites and couldn't get on the Microsoft site so rebooted my router and all was ok.

Managed to fix it.

Went to re-register the windows update dll's, noticed that regsvr32.exe was missing.
Downloaded Regsvr32.exe from the Microsoft site. As soon as I copied this to the %windir%\system32 folder I got a msg asking for the WinXpSP2 CD. It didn't like the WinXPSP2 CD I put in so I clicked on cancel. Got a msg about some files not being right etc.etc..

Reinstalled Windows XP SP2. Problem sorted.

Cheers for all help. I can run Windows Updates with no issues now.
