I have to go to Olympia area on monday, from Devon.

Can anyone suggest the best place to get a train from that can be driven to as the train from here is over 4.5 hours and costs a fortune.

Depends how close you want to drive in really. If you want to get pretty damn close then I'd suggest Richmond. It's not too far from the M4 which is where I assume you'd likely head in towards London, parking isn't too bad (or wasn't when I last went there) and it's on the district line which is the same line as Kensington.

As mentioned above, Bristol wouldn't be too bad, especially if you book in advance. Train from there into London is around 1 hour 45.

I've just had a look on a map and found basingstoke conveniently located at the end of the A303 so easy to get to from here and only an hour from London - feasible??

Yup, I live in Basingstoke. Trains from here are regular and only take around 45 minutes to get into London Waterloo. All day parking at the station is around £7.30 and a peak travelcard into London is around £45. Off peak a lot less of course, £24 ish if I remember correctly.

£107 for a day return from Exeter St Davids, leaving at 5.56 and arriving at Paddington at 8.34, leave London at 7pm and back at 9.20.

That's got to be cheaper and easier than petrol, parking etc.

More expensive actually but worth considering.

Do trains have power sockets like aeroplanes for laptops or am i destined to 3+ hours of hell each way?

The First Great Western ones have plug sockets on them. Only on table seats though, it seems.

Whenever I go to Birmingham or Leeds there's usually a power socket. It's worth checking first class - you sometimes get cheaper deals on that. Would have to check with whoever runs that line.

Where are you looking. The trainline shows the quickest as over 3 hours with most being 4 hours from exeter???

Absolute rubbish - they are only 3-3.30 hours from Plymouth and thats an hour further down the line. Trains via Basingstoke from Exeter are slower as they use the West of England Mainline but the main Great Western Mainline trains are far quicker.

I also live in Devon and I never, ever, drive to London. The train is faster, easier and more convenient and even as a walk-on fare is no more expensive than driving instead.

I drove once - never again.
