getting LAg in any STEAM game

I have recently got Sky Broadband 8mb.

I have Vista x64 & 8800Ultra, Q6600, 4GB memory etc... also i am conencted to my router via a wirless PCI card.

Any game i use in steam has a high ping and lag spikes...

Every so often the game will pause for say 2 seconds and then i will either be dead or somewhere i didnt want to be on any STEAM game.

Any suggestions?
 
If you can, plug the router into the PC via a cable just to test to see if its a wireless issue! Always a good idea to eliminate that first!
 
Yeah 9 times out of 10 this will turn out to be one of two problems.

A wireless problem - as has been said, try using a cable to rule this out.

An ISP/BT related issue, such as an overloaded exchange or general problem with your line.
 
Could be the infamous Vista wireless lag, there are two popular tools to fix it, WLAN Optimizer and Vista Anti-Lag (should be easy to find on Google). It happens about every 60 seconds if you want to time it, it's because Vista is searching for other wireless networks even though you're already connected to one.
 
nothing fixed it .... that Vista Anti Lag just made the problem seem a little better but it still existed...

Ive gone Wired straight to my router now and its spot on but my Ping is still the same in any server - 50 - 111 Ping...

Im on Sky Broadband and its 8mb... on speedtest websites im get like 7100k download and 350 upload.

And when i download im getting like 400 - 800 kb/s download speed.

Cant think why im getting so much lag. My mate who lives about 5 mins away is getting like 20 - 30 ping?

Any suggestions?
 
call sky, many sky bb users have good speeds but high latency, however usually 1 phone call resolves this. Should be some more info kicking about the networking forums here
