These last couple of days ive noticed something weird happening with myfps in games. I was playing crysis and getting 60-80fps @1680x1050 which is fine but when i looked at the graphs on afterburner the gpu usages wasnt constantly up at 98-99% like it is when i play games like dirt2. Also i was playing modern warfare 2 just now and i was getting like 30-40fps @ 5040x1050 and again in after burner my gpus were hovering at like 50 60%. I definately dont have a cpu bottleneck, any suggestions.

Running cat 11.2

Sounds like you're running out of VRAM. Remeber with crossfire/SLi 2x 1gb = 1gb. I'm currently playing Fallout 3. For 98% of the game it runs flawless on max settings @ 1920x1200 with Vram usage of around 820-950 but then 2% of the game causes it to max out and slow down. Not badly but stands out when you're running at 60fps with vsync. GPU usage is low, think it's about 40-60%.

Your running out of vram.

Ohhhh this is really what i dont want to hear.

When the next gen comes out i guess ill try and grab 2 6950's when the prices drop and flash them to 6970's :( DAYUMMM.

Is there any program i can use to monitor vram i saw in the high res screen shot thread some person had one which was an overlay like fraps i asked but havent got a reply yet...

apparently im using 1500 according to ati tray tools... which is impossible and it was call of duty was running as smooth as ever... weird??

Just saw this guys post and just wanted to ask a question because I'm planning on having sli or crossfire in future so good to know these things...but hes saying hes getting low fps with 2 gpu's and your saying its because hes running out of vram? what is vram? the memory on his graphics card? and what does this mean, how can he get around this issue?

yes thats correct (mem on gfx card) , you can get around it by not using 3 monitors or lowering the res ;)

it uses system ram also.

so i could theoretically run the game look the the ati tray tools number the quickly alt tab into the processes section of task manager then take the total memory and - the system memory to get my vram? or is it not this simple. Also is there a 2gb 6870 on the market which i could get to resolve the problem.

this is a example of mine

Weird how mine says 2gb when it can only use 1 gb theoreticcally :S

Dont see how im running out when theres like 5gb available to it or is this info wrong?

The memory on each card has to mirror the other card so even though you have 2gb, you have to have 2 of everything so they can only hold 1gb of data, you just have 2 lots of it. Using system RAM is when it would slow down rather than just crashing or having missing textures. A bit like if you have a PC with low RAM, it doesn't stop working, it just uses a page-file on the HDD. VRAM is much faster than system RAM.
