getting mail to work using xampp

have never been able to use the php mail function when using xampp and i am finally getting annoyed without being able to fully test it out.

i have tried googling but cant find anything with what i am after.

anyone able to help me out?

in xampp control panel there is mercury mail (i assume this i what xampp uses to send mail?) which can't be selected as a service as it is greyed out and isn't shown as running like the rest even after pressing start is still doesn't say it is running however a message comes up saying

warning: terminating worker thread 3
mercury start port 25

you'll need to install your own mail server. it's not bundled in with xampp.
