Hi,

My brother currently has a Sony MHC-NX1 'Hi-Fi', and I am looking to get him one component for his birthday so he can start swapping out to some sort of entry level 'real' Hi Fi.

He likes that kind of 'party' sound (Listens to Electronic/ Dance a lot), so am wondering what is best....

-Speakers (Something like B&Ws)
-Amp (an Arcam unit might be a good choice here)
-CDP (Something by Marantz/ Arcam might be good here)

Realistically, I think the speakers are a good starting point, as I think the amp and CDP are connected via some odd 'serial cable', so will need replacing as a pair.

I am looking at the B&W DM601s second hand... hoping to pay under £50. Is this realistic, and are these good speakers?

Thanks

You might want something a bit more "punchier" than an Arcam amp. To be honest, hi-fi is something that is very personal. One person will much prefer the sound of one amp to another. I think a good set of speakers is probably a good call though. I think the 601's go for about £100 2nd hand.

If he's into his dance though, might be worth going to the 602's for the extra bass.

Just getting the whole hi-fi thing myself at the moment. Its an expensive hobby thats for sure.

Hifi is really all about personal preference... However i like the same music and have a Cambridge Audio Azur 640R AV Reciever and Tangent Clarity 8 front Floor-Standing Speakers. The speakers are in a piano style gloss black and mated to the amp have great punchy bass and a warm treble and look awesome next to my TV. The bass can be a little much for some genres though, like Rock.

The AV reciever is also great - I have Dolby Digital, DTS opt/coax/HDMI inputs from my 360, PC etc etc and the amp bumps up the power for stereo-only sources.
