I used to ride bikes on my cousins farm (about 15 years ago - 30 now) and a while back I was looking at doing my CBT, but put it off as I didn't actually have a bike.

However, a friend is offering up his 1988 ZX4 for the low low price of "if you can fix it, it's yours".

So, super excited!

Will be taking pics and doing a full assessment of work to be done at the weekend. Hopefully at which point I'll sign up for a direct access course in the next fortnight.

I'll admit that almost 60% of the reason for getting it is to work on. I bought my first (and only) car for the exact same reason (MX5 MK2) but because it's my daily driver (despite not being driven daily) there's never been anything wrong with it over the last 3 years, so don't really have a reason to take it off the road for extended period of time to tinker with it.

This should be the exact opposite and hopefully something to do with my dad at weekends as he was once a keen rider.

Argh! Just writing this all down has put a smile on my face!

Anyway, will update with pics soon :)

EDIT: Oh, I did mean to ask about what the second hand market is like for these bikes? I'm keen to keep costs down in general but any advice on places to get parts from? Google searching ZX4 etc doesn't seem to yield much results, at least when I compare it to the second hand MX5 market I'm used to dealing with!

Electrics are a bit wonky, generally needs a clean up and there's a hole in the muffler that won't pass an MOT (which it has until November)

Ok, so this is how it stands at the moment. The good news is it's actually running! My mate just had another look at the electrics and noticed a mistake / loose wire and it's running! :D

Before it's been handed over my mate has:
Replaced the oil, brake fluid, coolant and rear brake cylinder.
Cleaned the carbs as well as synced and balanced them.
It's got a new oil and air filter, spark plugs, battery, fuel filter and hoses.

Known issues are:
Exhaust has one massive hole in the muffler and likely another in the manifold
Chain and sprocket are worn and rusted
Speedo doens't work
General corrosion
Front spokes should probably have seals replaced
Front brake bleed nipple has snapped off
Brakes are questionable (but his only personal point of reference is his Ducati)

Plenty of things for me to fix up on it to make it feel like my own :)
