Hi all

Sat in my cellar is a 2007 Specialized FSR XC, which hasn't been used for a good few years now. The main reason is that the rear disc brake is knackered and I couldn't afford to sort it at the time.

I've now got the spare cash though and would like to get it back on the road but I'm a bit confused about the fittings for modern disc brakes. Will I need some sort of adapter and new rotors or can I just buy the lever/caliper combo and fit everything as normal? I'm looking at getting the Shimano XT ones.

Discs are largely a mystery to me so any advice would be much appreciated!

looks like it has normal 6 bolt rotors - these are still standard (id imagine your hubs are not the shimano specific centerlock ones) measure the rotor size and buy the new ones in the same size or change it with the right adaptors (see below)

looks like its "post mount" brakes and "is mount" frame and fork using adaptors
but use this page as a guide and check your bike:
http://www.rotorburn.com/forums/sho...tween-an-IS-mount-and-a-post-mount-disc-brake

you can buy adaptors of various sizes to go with the combination you need and the rotor size you want
rear adaptor http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shimano-mount-adaptor-rear-post-to-is/rp-prod13749
front adaptor http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shimano-mount-adaptor-front-post-to-is/rp-prod13743

shimano rotors are 160, 180 or 203mm
normal use might be something like 180 front with 160 rear - or bigger if you like DH stuff
bigger the size the more stopping power (but heavier)
shimano do two types - normal and ice tech, the ice tech dissapate heat better but are more expensive (in truth most people do fine with the cheaper normal ones)

XT brakes are excellent, if you need to save cash SLX or deore are almost exatly the same brake function wise
you'll have to cut the hoses down id expect - good guides on youtube if you are careful (I managed which is saying something)

you dont need new rotors if they are the correct size for shimano brakes and if so you dont need new adaptors either (i think you have 160mm rotors but measure them!)
although you might find the rotors you currently have are not very good quality....
