Getting old, I guess.

So I fired up Borderlands 2 for a quick game yesterday. And I just can't do it any more. I'm too slow. I guess that comes from being nearly 60. Or maybe I was having a bad day. But more and more I'm going for games which don't require fast reactions, like Sniper Elite 4.

I was never any good at the fast FPS games back in the day. Quake, doom, Unreal Tournament etc.

30 years later Im actually better, no idea how or why still rubbish but then the benchmark I set myself back then was so low!

If you haven't played it in a while the gameplay can feel pretty stale and motivation lacking. I enjoyed games like that only with friends really, they are relatively soulless without that multiplayer element.

I prefer games like Valheim, Aska or slower paced shooters combat where the stakes are higher and not every enemy feels like a bullet sponge. The higher stake games like Helldivers 2 IMHO gets that balance really nicely, although I can't play for long unless it's with friends :)

I'm fueled by banter in those games..

you have to put the hours practice in, when i used to play FPS games I was on them for several hours every day and you would get gradually faster and stronger over time.

I realised this a few years ago playing PUBG with my younger brothers, their reflexes were just so much better than mine (although I partly blame the perpetual state of tiredness which comes from having 2 kids...)

Checkout Helldivers 2. It's PVE, you vs the AI, and more about the insanity that ensues.

It's still a shooter, but the fact its PvE keeps away the worst of the toxic elements, and the entire game style is more about having fun and experiencing cinematic moments; with a dose of Starship Troopers, Terminator and the likes thrown in.

Its been awhile since I played BL2, but some builds/characters are easier to run than others and some really don't require fast reactions.

The little girl with the mech can be pretty devastating and that thing will do a lot of the heavy lifting for you, I seem to recall there being an explosive type build for Brick(?) that steamrolls a lot of things too and doesn't require much in the way of precision.

I do find that at 40 I'm not picking up games as quickly as I used to, FPS is probably my least played genre and it can take a little more perseverance on my end when I do start playing one in order to get into the flow.

Funny, I consider the Borderlands Games as easy going games. I don't consider them as twitch games requiring fantastic reflex's. They are games that I can just jump into play for a few minutes or a few hours. I have never felt like reaction time was that important.

I can’t do much gaming anymore, I’m only 39. Vestibular system all messed up. Just leaves me feeling sick. I’m still interested in hardware and having a high end PC I just rarely game. Silly really but some old habits die hard.

Fella I'm 51 this year, I tried a recent Doom game and nearly broke my hands.

Part of the reason I don't grab the latest and greatest gear (still rocking a 1070) is because that fast gameplay seems like too much work.

I would consider having a crack at games from earlier times that you may have missed that were not FPS.

Or do as I did, stuck to Warframe and go play older classic games...planescape torment...anyone?

FPS games? after 30 years it gets a bit old tbh (counting from Doom in '94, earlier doesn't count, not really). You can dress the game up in fancy shaders/RT/environments but it's still the same old.

Give me a twist or something new, I can still shoot people in the face, but do I want to? ;) Nothing to do with getting older.

Edit - Days Gone helped me rediscover my love of gunplay. Try it, you may like it.

Days Gone is an amazing experience that I'd recommend to anyone, and I went into it super fatigued by zombie and open world content. It's worth the time spent and that ride over a mountain mid-late game as a certain song plays is for me one of the most iconic moments in my gaming history.

I remember feeling like this the first time I tried COD Warzone - it just felt too intense and quick to enjoy :D

Currently playing “Dave the Diver”, much better pace :p

I think part of this stems from the fact there are a lot more games these days, and most of them are generic/mediocre at best; the truly great games are few and far between. I think the last "pure" shooter I really enjoyed was Metro Exodus, before that Titanfall 2; struggling to think of any in the last 5 years that have grabbed me!

This is me and I am getting worse. Also I find I just don't have enough motivation to spend very long trying to improve or work it out anymore. For me now gaming has to be a quite easy activity that relaxes me rather than an intense activity I can devote a lot of energy to.

I bought Hogwarts a while ago and really enjoyed playing it initially but even in a game like that I find the combat too difficult. Encounters that were recommended for level 2 I was struggling with at level 20. I saved just before a fight with the intention of going back and just practicing various techniques and strategies but I haven't done so. Every time I think of going back to it I can't really be bothered. I enjoy running around and exploring the world but the repeated twitch combat I don't.

You can only watch the same movie or variation of it so mainly times without becoming jaded and although choice has increased, it seems to just mean there is so much more 7 out of 10 filler around.

It's telling that thinking about what you wrote above I immediately thought of the likes of NOLF, Fear and Bad Company. Some of which are over 20 years old,

I stopped with fast paced games, particularly multiplayer years ago. Too slow, too tired, can’t be bothered. Plenty of excellent slower paced games out there. At least developers are also now giving us tonnes of difficulty modifiers in most games, I need them!
