Getting old! Something high mpg and comfortable.

Was loving the V70 D5 until the end of the video I was watching stated the mpg wasn't good, WAHHH! The S80 looks great though, have looked at a few video and will do some more research on it but it looks about perfect so far!

Volvo S60 D5 looks nice as well but I'll need to have a proper look. Any more suggestions?

Only 5 CCXRs?! Ah well, I'll have to just opt for my second choice of the classic Ferrari F40 instead, a smidge cheaper as well.

You want what you want, but if you were to drop the silly MPG requirment you'd open up a whole world of cars that were both decent and comfortable.

I didn't realise the new S80s had been out so long, and thus already in your budget.
If you can find a good one, do it.

The S60 is a much older car, doubt it's worth spending £10k on one.
What about an S-Type 2.7D ?

I know it's been a while but we went and test drove some of the suggestions and found the Volvo S60 was the best for us. We also really liked a Merc CLK 220 CDI but have decided against it as it's a bit more flash than we want.

We test drove an Audi A4 and a BMW 3 series but neither were as good overall for us. The Merc didn't even have cup holders, seriously - where am I supposed to put my McDonalds Latte man!? The BMW was nice enough but pretty clinical on the interior compared to the S60 which just felt like a mini living room.

So, the S60 wins right now and we're going to start looking for one to buy earlyish next year unless we come across something else in the meantime. They're cheaper as well so some money can go in the bank which is cool.

Is there anything specs wise that's worth making sure an S60 has when buying? Cheers for all the suggestions, we might have ended up with a EcoMuppet car without em. :D

It has to be an SE with winter pack (heated seats) and look for facelifted 05 and later cars.

I have the SE but no winter pack. Heated seats would be nice, as being diesel it takes a while to warm up.

Beware the 180bhp D5 engine as it has a dual mass flywheel. Not a problem in itself but this is very expensive to put right when/if it needs changing. not sure when this appeared but may well be out of budget for one that new anyway. Other than that i'd say this is a car you buy on condition, not miles. A low miler will be hard to find as many of them were fleet cars and lived on the motorway, and high miles with a fsh will be nothing unusual.

my dads A3 2.0 TD gets 75mpg cruising at 80, at 60 it gets over 100mpg, think its a SE or a sport model.

was comfy for the couple of hours i drove it up and down the motorway and its nippy.

Auris Hybrid is not a good car, in economy/character/driveability terms - avoid. It's perfectly acceptable when viewed in isolation but compared to say, any modern diesel, it suddenly loses its appeal.

You could try a new Passat diesel, worth a shot. I had a BlueMotion one for a bit, was a great car with plenty of kit and some neat features. Easily did more than 60mpg too, when being driven like it was stolen, which is about 10 more than you'd ever get out of an Auris driven gently :D - plus you don't have to put up with that annoying CVT transmission :D

:D

That's odd, because Audi themselves can only get 67mpg out of it in their controlled conditions.

It also means that your dad can potentially get about 1200 miles out of a tank?

All the cars in your list bar the Merc are crap.

Seriously, the EcoMuppet cars are for company car drivers - lowest tax. For private buyers they are totally pointless. Yipee! My car does 70mpg on the EU extra urban cycle! Shame it cost £15,000! Doh.

Have to agree with this. I have one as a company car. It does it's job but it's dull as dishwater and they have added so much eco crap that it will probably be scrap metal in 4-6 years when it all starts going wrong. Also because of the fancy new injectors it runs badly and has high fuel consumption if you shove Asda diesel in there, so I have to buy Shell or BP. Again I don't care as it's a company car, but that pretty much eats your MPG savings.

But hey, it's low tax, right?
