Getting PS3 controller to work on PC

I just realized that the PS3 controllers come with a little USB cable that I can plug into the PC - so surely there must be ways of using it on the PC? I've seen very little on the subject, does anyone know if it's actually feasible? Would like to try it with racing and FPS games

That's what I've found but it doesn't work with Vista x64.

In control panel, the PC can see the controller but it doesn't respond to calibration attempts
