This is on behalf of my cousin who as asked me to help.

He wants to get his PS3 on his 19" TFT computer monitor, even though he does have a 32" HD. However, he rarely can use the TV as it is always being watched. :o

What is the easiest way to connect then? He has been looking at HDMI > DVI cables but his monitor doesnt have the DVI socket, only the old school VGA. His graphics card is a 8800GTS, if that can be used in some way. He has seen on the internet a box that converts digital to analogue signal so that it can be used on his TFT, but it is £50, and they go even higher than that!

Basically, what is it the easiest way of doing this.

Thanks for any help. :)

I have been debating for a while to buy the PS2 linux cable and try it (I use HDMI, but just a test to help out others and then sell it on MM if it works). I know V1N on these forums has used this fine to connect to a VGA port on a projector and played games and blu-ray with no issue.

The cost is 21.49+ VAT and can be bought online from http://linuxplay.com/acatalog/

You will get Linux for ps2 on dvd which will be useless, but you can't get the cable on its own.

It only takes one person to buy it and test it to then let other people have confidence, but as yet I only know of V1N who has used the cable, and I believe he no longer has the cable.

I'm not sure if the PS3 has componant outputs, if it does and the monitor supports it you could probably use an adaptor.

If not then it's going to get fairly complicated as not only is it going to require a digital to analogue adaptor (not going to be cheap), but may have problems with the PS3 wanting to use a HDCP enabled display on it's digital output (something not found on analogue inputs).

Yea VGA is analogue so there is no way it will work with a HDMI-DVI-VGA converter. If his screen was DVI-D, HDMI-DVI would work, but its fairly unlikely considering screen age & size (+ HDCP compliance). He'll have to get a VGA to Component converter which converts the signal (& bypasses HDCP) so that you can connect the VGA input on his screen to the PS3's Av-out output using a Component cable. Or just try the linux cable.

I am ordering the Linux cable tomorrow morning (should have it this week). Just for once and all to see if it works. (hope someone buys it off me though if it works :p ). Else I am stuck with a 25 pound cable I may not ever need to use!!

If it outputs 1080p nicely i maybe intrested as im having to use VGA for my computer whilst my PS3 uses DVI! (Dell 2407) Wouldnt mind going back to DVI on my comp if the VGA cable is sharp enough. :)

Does the cable have sound outputs as well if it uses the AV-out?

Yes.

Monitor Cable Adaptor (for PlayStation® 2) :
Connects from AV out on PlayStation 2 to VGA monitor cable. Also has two phono audio jacks for stereo speakers.

I think the only restriction is the monitor must support "sync on green" to play ps2 games. I don't know what this means for ps3 games, so I will test. Needless to say very few monitors these days don't have this function.

They have a database, but I guess as very few people use linux on ps2 now, that it does not have newer monitors or HDTVs in it:

I'd probably flog the monitor and get one of those 19" hybrid TV-monitor things you see in high street stores. The resolution at 1440x900 is suffice for computing and it will have component inputs for games consoles.

I was thinking of going HDMI to DVI cable for my Dell 2405, but then after reading up on the problems with HDCP, it appears to not work. So I guess I wouldn't get any picture for gaming? since the 2405 doesn't have HDCP.

I have tried Component on the 2405 and is absolutely garbage at 720/1080p. Reason is, the later models after Summer 05 had the rubbish component chip in the display as well as the specific firmware versions. Dated August 05, Firmware 1.8.

Previous versions with the specific chip and firmware had much better picture quality. I suffer bad artifacts on the picture via component as well as terrible jaggies. Standard definition looks better than it. Though I'd love to have 1080P on the 2405 if it wasn't for the HDCP problems. :/

You can get one for around £40-£45 and are really good quality + you get audio connections. I used one on my TFT before I got my 32" TV and the picture quality was excellent. All you need is a PS2 Component lead.

Best bet for you cousin I recon.:)
